Parrotfish
at Hanauma Bay
on the island of Oahu
Hawai'I

This male red-lipped Parrotfish (Scarus sordidus) looks as if he is about to swallow the Goldring Sturgeon, but Parrot fish are notorious for churning coral into sand. They grow to about 36 cm. and are among the most photogenic fish at Hanauma Bay.
Male juvenile parrotfish are very difficult to classify because their blue/green hues are changeable; perhaps computer technology will enable the parrotfish family classifications to be reduced from hundreds to a number which enables accurate classifiction!
This female Stareye Parrotfish is distinguished by long "eyelashes" - bands radiating from her eyes.
Female Stareye Parrotfish may look coquetish, but the "eyelash" bands are pink on males !
Female parrotfish appear in reds, brown, and dark colours when young.
This female find red an attractive colour to wear, but not on her lips!
Parrotfish and Christmas Wrasse are the Mutt and Jeff of Hanauma Bay!
