Many individuals say that we can predict the future.
And a lot of people don't care whether people can do it.
So? Which group are you in?
Me? I am in all groups.
Ambivalence? Not really, but I think humans' lives are mysterious. Both "a lot of things" and "nothing" can explain humans' lives.
Sometimes you should care about what will happen following your behaviors. Sometimes you should not care about the results of those behaviors.
Well, how can people know that
this situation should be cared of or not?
All psychologists agree that a thing causes another thing(s) neurologically, behaviorally, cognitively, psychologically, or all.
Most psychologists accept that many variables influence the consequence. And most of them believe that
inner variables of each person make things different.
Thus, if we want to know our future, we may pay attention to how we are right now, what we already did, how it affects the environment, and how the environment is at the time.
I think you already know about the cause-affect relationship. Unfortunately, the relationship idea explains effectively only for the short term events. To predict long term situation, we need a lot of information involving a lot of things. We can only expect the tendency and possibility of a situation.
On the other hand, astrologists say they can tell what may happen in the long term life.
For example, one of my friends was predicted seven years ago that she would travel very frequently through out her life.
At that time, she and I were thinking about what kind of job she would have in the future, which job would make her travel a lot. Can you imagine how many careers that have to travel frequently.
??guess what??
Today,
she is a flight attandant, travelling around the world.
Wow ! the prediction is correct, isnt' it.
Let's use the relation of cause and affect explain this.
1)She is a beautiful girl and has a great shape.
2)Her language abilities are very good.
3)She loves to make other people feel good and be happy.
and 4)She loves traveling.
Well, these reasons can explain why she can be a flight attendant;
however, we cannot predict that a person with these qualities
will be a flight attendant in the future.
Seven years ago, she had no interest about working after graduation. She was interested in studying a master's program.
Four years later, her friends and her were looking for jobs.
Most of them applied for being flight attendant and asked her to apply with them.
If they did not ask her to apply with them
or if noone of her friends was not interested in the career,
would she finally be a flight attendant?
If a fortuneteller did not predict that she would travel a lot,
would she consider this career?
OK now, what is the most important cause?
Knowing about the future?
Fundamental needs and characteristics of hers?
Her friends' ideas and influences from external variables?
Or what?
