Shellfish closure wasn't for entire harbour and basin

by Anita Voss, February 28, 2001 to the Sooke Mirror

In the article Municipality begins campaign to sell sewage system to the public (Sooke News Mirror Feb. 21) we are informed by Canadian Food Inspection Agency specialist, Klaus Schallie, that "shellfish closure in the harbour and basin has been in effect at least since the 1970s."

This is not correct because a 1975 environmental protection service study recommends closure of the northern part of Sooke Harbour and Basin, practically the "Sooke" side, leaving the southern half of the Harbour and Basin, the East Sooke side, except for some small pockets, open for clam fishery.

In a 1986 study of the same agency the closure area was extended however, still leaving the East Sooke side of the basin except a small part of Anderson Cove and south of Woodward Point open for clam fishery.

The total closure of Sooke Harbour and Basin took effect only later.

In the discussion about for and against sewers we should be provided with correct and honest information by council and their consultants, especially as information material in these rather specialized topics are difficult to obtain for the residents.
