Election needed to wake up council
Letter from Glenn Dickie to the Sooke News Mirror, November 13, 2002

Current council needs a wakeup call. It concerns me when our council makes decisions and recommendations that seem to imply that they don’t care or haven’t done their homework.

The process that they are endorsing regarding the vote on the proposed sewer project is weak and unjust. If they think that sewers have the support of affected residents why not just use a referendum? If all it means is a "cup of coffee a day" as our mayor implies why not at least implement a reverse referendum? How insensitive. On top of the $50 per month tax increase, what about hook-up costs (in the thousands) and let’s not forget the increase in maintenance costs approaching (to help pay for roads and RCMP)? How many cups of coffee will that cost?

How many of the current council live in the affected area? Only one at last count. I know a neighbour that will be forced to sell his home and move away if he is hit with all these "cups of coffee." No joke. Imagine if you are a senior or have a young family on a fixed budget and you’re hit with one forced cost after another even if your septic field is working fine and you don’t support the service.

It’s time that we have a council in place that cares not just about development and increasing the tax base. Let’s elect one that advocates fair play and social conscience.

When I cast my vote on Nov. 16, I will only be placing Xs beside three candidates’ names as we do not have to vote for a total of seven. Maybe this will give council the wakeup call they need, then they can go get a cup of coffee for themselves.
