soundwave's top 10 of 2002 - 10/12/03 - I WILL BE REVISING THIS LIST VERY SOON,
NOW THAT I HAVE SEEN MOST OF THE 2002 RELEASES

10. One Hour Photo / 25th Hour (tie)

These two tied for number 10 because they were both great films and I didn't want to cut either of them of the list. One Hour Photo gave us Robin Williams best performance of the year as Sy Parish, the lonely photo store guy who lives through the pictures that he develops. Williams was very creepy. The movie looked great and had a very good supporting cast. This and Insomnia were big steps away from his normal crazy comedy act. In 25th Hour Edward Norton Played a guy who's going to prison for seven years for a drug bust. This movie was filled to the brim with great performances. It addressed September 11th in a way that didn't annoy me. This is probably the only really good Spike Lee movie ever.

9. Catch Me If Your Can
This was probably one of the biggest surprises to me of the year. It was an all around fun and entertaining movie. It's another winner from Steven Spielberg. With him releasing this and Minority Report I am surprised that he wasn't nominated for at the least for Best director.

8. Star Wars : Episode II - Attack of the Clones
Star Wars Ep. II was a big improvement over Phantom Menace. It takes place where the last one left off. While the acting isn't excellent, its better than you would expect from the new Star Wars movies. The action and the special effects are incredibly awsome, so I can't wait for Star Wars Episode III.

7. Spider-Man
I had been waiting for a long time for them to make a Spider-Man Movie, I mean a really good Spider-Man Movie. And they didn't disappoint at all. While Tobey Maguire was a left field choice he did the job better then i could have ever hoped and imagined.

6. The Ring
One of the best horror/suspense/thriller movies I have seen in a while. The Ring is about a mysterious video tape that is killing off anyone who watches it. Naomi Watts is great as the journalist trying to figure out where this tape came from. It delievered alot of scares and had a great story. It's based on Ringu, a Japanese movie that was hugely successful.

5. Punch-Drunk Love
This movie changed the way I looked at Adam Sandler. It showed that he could be an actor, and not just a goofball comedian. The whole cast was excellent in this weird and bizarre movie. P.T. Anderson has showed that he is the best director around today.

4. Red Dragon
After the crapfest that was Hannibal, Dr. Lector is back and better than ever. Usually remakes (remake of Manhunter) don't get me all that excited but this one did. Surprisingly Brett Ratner does a really good job directing the great cast of Red Dragon.

3. Minority Report
The second Spielberg movie to appear on my list. Minority Report is a dark movie about a pre-crime unit that catches murderers before thay actually commit the murder. This is one of Tom Cruises best performances of his career. Colin Farrell is also great as a cop who wants Cruises job.

2. Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
After seeing Fellowship of the Ring I didn't think that The Two Towers could compete with it. I was wrong. It has some of the greatest action sequences I have seen in the last couple of years. The performances were excellent as well. I can't wait for December when Return of the King to come out.

1. Signs

This was an all around great movie. It had a great script, great actors giving great performances (Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix especially), and great direction from a great director (M. Night Shyamalan). This movie was frightening, but at the same time funny. It was scary, but at the same time thought provoking. Signs was much, much more than just another run of the mill alien invasion movie.
