Annie's principle

"Sweet dreams are made of these
who am I to disagree
I've traveled the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something"

Eurhythmics, Sweet Dreams

Khin Wee and I adopted this song, and promulgated Annie's principle because this song seemed to encapsulate the idea our English teacher, Jackie Toh was trying to infuse into us. It was in our secondary school (high school) English classes that she taught us about school friends. She asked us to look around us the lab and said, "Look at the faces of your true friends, friends you have grown up with through your school years. IF they are your friends now, they are true friends because they know you warts and all. You've grown up together. When you get out there, out of school, you will meet many snakes and cheats."

I have found this to be true, to a large extent. You can still meet good friends, but boy, I have been in a situation which showed me that I must be circumspect until I know people are friends.

But there is my failure, for I still open up soon. For the simple truth is that is that in opening up to another, one shows trust, and in so doing one lays the foundation for friendship.
