Garden of the Gods

On Thursday, March 15th in the year 2001, The Adventure Group visited the Garden of the Gods in Colorado. The following is their pictorial account and written report of that experience.

Our Trip Report

The words "capital place for a beer garden" were muttered by a young Rufus Cable back in 1859. From that moment it was called Garden of the Gods. Located just west of Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods was our next stop in Colorado. Unfortunately for us, it was getting dark quickly so our tour of the park was cut short. The bright red rocks shooting from the ground high into the evening sky captivated us. 1350 acres of sheer beauty is nestled between Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs. The views are that of a fairy tale. We toured the park on the man-made trails for about an hour and then quickly returned to the car to view the amazing Balanced Rock. Balanced Rock is just that, a gigantic boulder resting upon a tiny base. We climbed right up to the base and took some great pictures. The sun had gone down and our tour was finished. Back at the turn of the 20th century, the head of the Burlington Railroad, Charles Elliott Perkins, donated his homestead, which encompasses the Garden of the God to the city of Colorado Springs. His wish was this: "where it shall remain free to the public, where no intoxicating liquors shall be manufactured, sold, or dispensed, where no building or structure shall be erected except those necessary to properly care for, protect, and maintain the area as a public park." We found this quite contradictory to its origin.
