“How close are you to your stepchild?”

I ran a poll for 7 months asking this question. Here are the results …

Total Votes: 144

We confide in each other (31) 22%
We'll chat every now & then (41)  28%
We're just civil to each other (28)  19%
There is open hostility (38) 26%
There is violence (6)  4%

Here are some comments that the voters submitted …

when the kids were you 7yrs ago everything was cool. Their Bio didn't come around for 2weeks. Now that they are beautiful teens, he comes around about twice a week, of course to that the credit. The wife gets mad if I interfere with his plans and my stepchildren. The bad part is the wife say his time equals child support. I read it takes about 150,000 to raise a kid. I'm getting a divorce. 'skidrowjj@earthlink.net' Thanks, Jon

Me and my wife get into disagreements over my comments to the kids, how can i resolve the matter without getting into an argument

It is not easy

FAMILY IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT

they don't do as they are told

It grows from a jealousy that I feel when my spouse never takes my side!

I was surprised to see hostility at such a high percentage.

The partners of Step Parents have to set clear boundaries about what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior to the new step parent. If the child is allowed to say openly mean and hostile things to the step parent without some kind of reprimand it shows the child that it is OK to disrespect and hate the step parent. No-one should be hated just for loving someones mother or father.

There is not a day that pases that we don't say that we love each other.

no relationship,adolescent aggression, no communication
