| 3 years ago, I began publishing a website that offers free advice to stepdads. I now receive about a ten emails per week from stepdads and their wives asking for help. Some simply want to thank me for the site; others beg me to help save their marriages. I’ve had email from mothers thanking me for sorting out their husband’s issues. These men haven’t the time, money, nor patience to sit down with a college grad’ counsellor who has no idea what it’s like to be a stepdad. To these dads, my articles on stepfatherhood speak louder than a PhD. I am part of a growing number of unqualified counsellors who give free advice to strangers on the ‘net. The World Wide Web is the perfect medium for niche issues. My stepdaughter has a site that gives advice to other teenagers ... http://oocities.com/teenagecounsellor/ Again, she has no qualifications except life experience. The visitors to our websites wouldn’t have it any other way. Not only is my site doing the work of paid counsellors, but it has also done the work of our public services as well. I received an email from a mother in Queensland who wanted a list of stepfamily videos. Her husband could not read, so any written advice could not help him. She had tried to contact the Department of Families, but they never returned her calls. I found this unbelievable, so I tried contacting the Department myself. After being passed around to just about everybody on their staff before being redirected to some guy who said he’d get back to me. I’m still waiting on that call. I decided to spend a day surfing the web to create my own list of stepfamily videos. I created a new page on my site for the list and included reviews and purchasing info. If anyone wants to locate such information, all they have to do is enter “stepfathers” in any of the popular search engines (go, google, yahoo, overture, aol, lycos, dmoz, excite, msn, alltheweb, webcrawler, etc), and you will find my website is the first in the list. This free service will prove to be much more efficient than a multimillion dollar state government department who don’t return your calls. |
