Greenbank Cemetery
When he was about 12 he went to work for his uncle, Titus who had no children of his own. He must have been a good worker because, every time he wanted to leave, Titus offered him more money. By this time his mother was very ill and his brother Timothy had gone to Ackworth School. His father was still able to work well but, with times hard, family to feed, a sick wife and a housekeeper and doctor's bills to pay, the boys had to help with the finances. When the family left Old Robbins and went back to Greenbank, Isaac came to work for his father and also for his grandfather and his uncles Titus and Richard. He was just 15 when his mother died leaving a tiny brother, David.

He had many friends among whom was a young lady named Nancy (or Nanny). She was not a Quaker and more and more Isaac drifted away from the strict Quaker ways that his mother had fostered so strongly. He chafed under their "Musty old rules." He liked to join his friend in public houses, which was much frowned upon by the "dry-mouthed Quakers." Soon his father was "under dealing" with the overseers on Isaac's account and, when Ann also rebelled, David could hold out no longer and resigned from the Quakers.

By this time the family had moved to Langthwaite, having "gone under the hammer" at Greenbank. For many years his father had toyed with the idea of emigrating to America. He had wanted to go when his brother Timothy emigrated in 1821 but his wife, Molly, was so ill that it was not possible. But now the consideration became serious. At first Isaac did not want to leave but, when his romance fell through and the family seemed to be working to no advantage, he agreed.

Isaac's brother, Timothy went first in 1832 to see the "lay of the land." Somehow David scraped together the money to send Timothy by packet boat to Virginia. David's own health had begun to fail. He suffered a great deal with his "innards." and so most of the management of the move fell to Isaac who was not "so sharp a business man" and was totally unsuited to the responsibility. But he was caught in the "eldest son" syndrome, which at that time seemed to approach mania. In a letter David wrote to his brother Timothy in Ohio, he said, "would that Timothy had been born first." Timothy was the studious one, many talented and of a more quiet and thoughtful nature, and a much better business man. Isaac was fond of people, friendly and trusted everybody. He took the place of eldest son seriously enough but was irked by the responsibility it entailed.

They held a sale and paid off their debts as best they could and booked a passage on the sailing ship "The Six Sisters" because the fare was more within their means than the steam packet. The relatives and friends transported them and their goods to Wardley's at the mouth of the river Wyre. Isaac stayed in Lancaster for a few days to make final settlements.

On board ship Isaac often helped the sailors and other passengers with their work. He liked to read and sometimes he would sit and "smoke his pipe like a philosopher."

When they arrived in Canada there was much to do on Quarantine Island and then up the river St. Lawrence. The slow barges were too much for Isaac and so he and Henry Loftus got off and walked much of the way to Prescot. At Prescot, after visiting friends, Isaac set off to find work. He worked on the Erie Canal, the railroad and as a piano maker in the USA. He had hopes of settling on the prairies because the woods "intimidated" him. He came back to see the family who were settled in a house in York and then took off again, working his way and looking for land to settle. He was not too pleased with the land finally chosen in Reach township, near Uxbridge. There was a lot of virgin bush, which he did not like. His father and Robert Wells took adjoining property in the 11th concession and Timothy nearby.

Getting from York to Reach was a laborious trip. The roads were just hacked out of the bush, often deep mud and some corduroy over swampy areas. Father David had to take it more slowly as the long ocean voyage had literally "tuckered him out," so Isaac and Ann walked on ahead taking young David and the cow along. Their father David waited at an inn for the cart to come and carry him and their goods forward.

It is not known whether there was a house on the land but almost certainly their first house would have been a log house and their furniture hand-made. Old David continued to decline. Young David was sent to Brantford to the Cockshutt family, who were David's trusted friends, but young David ran away and came back to Reach all alone. Ann persuaded her father and Isaac to let him stay at home until he was 14, which was the age at which young lads were expected to go out on their own in those days.

Isaac was inclined to take his father for granted but, as he lay dying, he then realised how dear the frail old man was to him. Tenderly wrapping the small body in his greatcoat, he held him in his arms while he breathed his last.

In 1846 Isaac and a man named Chippendale built a saw mill which did well for a few years until the timber thinned out.

The Cragg home was a favourite calling place for anyone travelling. People were coming and going all the time. Some stayed for days, even weeks. Isaac was actually too popular for his own good. These gatherings more and more included drinking, which, some say, was his eventual undoing.

Isaac was well educated and put great store in the education of the young. He was one of the leaders in establishing the first school in the area in 1847 and the first Methodist Church in 1848. [ The 1871 Census of Ontario states that his religion was Anglican.] He was very good at reading aloud and on some days his home was crowded with people listening to him read from the London Spector, Lancaster Guardian and Harper's Magazine or explaining the political situation.

When Isaac's wife, Margaret, died in 1857 leaving him with a baby three other girls, the oldest being only 16, he lost no time in marrying a second time. She was Hannah Smith from Inden where his younger brother, David, lived. She proved to be the love of his life. She was the perfect mother to her step-children as well as to her own that came later. She adored her bluff easy-going Isaac but this could have been a fault. He fed anyone and everyone who asked, whether they needed it or not. He took in relatives and friends, he lent money with no more security than a handshake and he backed bad notes. So, from being fairly well off, he died deeply in debt.

By about 1871 Isaac's health and fortunes had deteriorated to a very low ebb. Some say he drank himself both sick and poor. Some say he had the same "illness of the innards" that his father had and lost money through poor business management. Whatever the cause, Isaac knew he was dying and remorse filled his soul. He had only two sons, both of whom were too young to take over responsibility for the home and the young family. As a last resort, he persuaded his nephew, who was also his son-in-law, Timothy E. Cragg, to promise to take on these enormous responsibilities. Timothy was a kind and generous man. He took on the task knowing full well the implications. His young wife, Emma, objected, not wishing to saddle their young lives with such a burden. However, despite her youth, she carried even more than her share and acquitted herself admirably and was much loved by the young step-family.
