MATTHEW DYKTYNSKI AS BARRY GOLD

Barry is 30 years old, fit, tall, dark and handsome. His gold tipped hair is reminiscent of the classic Wham! style. Barry’s on-air style is ‘modern 80s’, cheeky, confronting, rude, objectionable and slick.

Barry may not know what he thinks on some issues, but he knows what his audience thinks and, for Barry, that’s close enough.

Barry doesn’t have a social conscience. He pursues the sensationalist angle from a ruthless hunger for ratings and on-air power, with the uncanny result of coming out on top. This, of course, aggrieves his producer Tracy Tracey no end.

Above all, Barry wants that morning show!

DYKTYNSKI ON BARRY GOLD

"He’s super confident and super arrogant but like all people I think these things often cover up major insecurity. I think Barry is actually different because he is quite smart - he’s like a lot of the tabloid editors. At the end of the day he’s got a nose for news and what will get the phones ringing in the studio. He knows that controversy will also get him into the headlines with stunts like intentionally upsetting one of his guests. I think often he would be someone who would giggle if he was listening to his own show rather than take it seriously. He’s an act and is well aware of that.

"Maybe I’m lucky in a way because I’ve done a show about radio before (RAW-FM - ABC TV) so I had a familiarity with the technical side of radio. I’m pretty much a lover of talkback radio. I enjoy getting incensed by what the jock says, by what the punters say and I spend most of my driving life yelling ‘I can’t believe you just said that - you idiot’, to the radio.

"I sat in with Greg Evans at Melbourne’s 3AK which is more like what the old CHAT-AM would have been like - easy listening, nothing too controversial. Then for the other end of the spectrum I sat in with Steve Price at 3AW and he’s more of a ‘shock jock’ in that he’s got attitude. He’s opinionated. You either agree with him strongly or disagree with him strongly. If you disagree with him strongly he’ll probably cut you off. That’s what people are like in talkback radio. There were some political hotcakes happening that day and it was amazing to see the pressure everyone in the studio was under. It was very helpful to the role."

MATTHEW DYKTYNSKI TALKS ABOUT THE 80s

"Now I look back on it and think what a very strange decade. I grew up in the 80s. My brother introduced me to lots of music like Phil Collins and Billy Joel. I distinctly remember waking up every morning to Believe it or not I’m walking on air - the tune from the Greatest American Hero.

"I remember Flock of Seagulls from the New Romantic era. I loved that stuff although my fashion sense was pretty poor. I’m not sure there will be an 80s renaissance, as it seemed like it was a pretty soulless time. There wasn’t a great deal of global awareness. It was a technological and financial go-ahead time and fashion and music got left behind."
