When you see (H) next to the name of a recipe it means that it is also for human use and is the amount you would mix for human use.  You may need to adjust the amounts for your horses.
Cold Packs

A cold pack helps the most durning the first 24 to 48 hours after the injury.  It decreases blood flow, reduces pain swelling and inflammation.  Apply ice pack two to three times a day.  This will help lower your horse's tissue temperature from it's existing level to 59 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit.  But any drop in temperatre will do good.

You can use a bag of frozen peas on the injured area.  Hold in place with a wrap.  The peas conture to the area.  30 mintues.
Hot Packs

Heat helps the most 72 horse or more after the injury.  The heat increases blood flow.  Increased blood flow helps improve soft tissue flexibility, reduces pain, and speeds healing.  Apply heat two to three times per day.  Your goal is to raise your horse's tissue temperature from its existing level to 104 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit.  Any increase is helpful.

You can buy hot packs from the store.  Secure it with a wrap.  Do not wrap to tightly, loose enought to secure the hot pack.  30 minutes.

Directions for Making Salves (H)
(These direcetions are used for the salve recipes listed below.)

To make salve, we extract the beneficial properties of our herbs in oil, then add beeswax to harden the oil.  The recipes are in parts so you may make as much or as little as you need.  To  begin your salve, measure the desired amounts of herb into an enamel or stainless stell pan, or into a crock pot.  Cover the herbs with oil.  Use enough oil to cover the herb plus another inch of oil above the lever of herbs.  Heat the herbs and oil over a low heat for several hours (about 3 hours).  If you are using roots you should heat the oil longer (about 5 hours).  Crock pots are better suited for this.  After heating, cool your oild for awhile.  Set up a strainer lined with cheesecloth then pour the oil through to strain.  When most of the oil has filtered through the cheescloth, keeping the herbs inclosed, and squeeze as much oil as possible from the herbs and cloth.  Add beeswax to the oil and heat it until all the wax is melted.  To test to see if your salve is hard enough put some on a spoon and set it in a cool place for a few minutes.  If your salve is to soft add more beeswax.  If you are using essential oils or Vitamin E you can blend them in now.  Finally, pour your salve into containers and label.

The beeswax can be measured by how much oil you use.
1 pint of oil -1 1/2 oz beeswax
12-14 oz of oil - 1 oz of beeswax
1 oz of oil - 1/2 teaspoon beeswax
There is about 5 teaspoons of beeswax in 1 oz.
