LATEST AOR NEWS

UPDATED JUNE 6 - 2001

KYLE VINCENT - Kyle has just released a CD with recordings from the 80s and early 90s called 'Sweet 16'. This album is a so-called mainstream 80s AOR/Radiorock record, so pretty interesting for people who liked his CD 'A night like this' that was released by AOR HEAVEN a few years ago. Next week a review of the album.

HAVEN - NOW & THEN / FRONTIERS is pleased to announce that the angelic, yet tough voice you hear in your head finally has a name. Her name is "Pamme". The music she plays is the one thing you can't escape from. Pamme is the singer with the latest hot new band to come out of the U.S. and the band is called Haven.

The band plays skillfully crafted songs which range from Power Rock Ballads to up tempo Hard Rock, with sultry Acoustic and Piano Ballads mixed in. They specialise in killer vocal / guitar melodies and inspiring lyrics. August 27th will see the European release of the 3 piece bands debut album which features special guest players including Matt Sorum (Guns n' Roses, Jeff Paris, Bourgeois Pigs and The Cult) on drums, and Robin McAuley ( MSG, Grand Prix, and Elements Of Friction) supplying background vocals on some songs.

In their own words, "The band has many musical influences which have melded together to give Haven thier own distinctive sound. Haven explores and provides a solid offering of lifegiving lyrics and introspection, woven amidst a melodic storm of high powered vocals and guitar work. We write from the heart, based not upon calculated efforts to clone the latest trend, but to use our music as a vehicle to uplift, heal and entertain, never forgetting why we started making music in the first place... We love it!"

Haven is the first female fronted act to be signed to the label in 5 years and is only the third in total, following Jaime Kyle and Dante Fox. This shows just how much potential NOW & THEN / FRONTIERS believes Haven has within the band.

UPDATED MAY 22 - 2001

Z ROCK-2001
THE RITZ MANCHESTER
6th May 2001

ENUFF Z'NUFF
VON GROOVE
BURNING RAIN
DREAM HUNTER
PRISONER
SEVEN WISHES
CONTAGIOUS

In a shrewd move by Z Records label boss Mark Alger, this years Z Rock event has moved to The Ritz in Manchester, England. The Ritz is a large venue with an upstairs area which was reserved for the bands and VIP guests. It's the first time since the mid 90's that a melodic rock fest such as this one has moved outside of Wigan (small town/village about 45 mins drive from Manchester), and it's about time to, so a big pat on the back to Mr.Alger for moving the scene on to bigger pasteures.

I arrived at the venue a little early and waited in the queue outside with everyone else. The bus with all the bands on pulled up and Chip Z' Nuff got out and came to meet us all and nicked my last stick of gum ha ha!! Nice guy, great attitude. My first glance inside The Ritz was of the stage itself which looks mighty professional compared to the stage at Maximes in Wigan, it's larger with more spotlights and more room for the bands to move around in and really put on a show for us fans, such as when Von Groove's Newcastle born frontman Michael Shotton climbed onto the top of the massive sound speakers to sing a few numbers during the bands triumphant debut UK set, a move that was later matched by Enuff Z' Nuff's Donnie Vie.
CONTAGIOUS kicked the proceedings off with a tight set. The band have clearly matured over the last year, they were very confident and fun to watch. They played a selection of new material and the material from their debut EP. The band's new songs were really good and came over as vintage classic rock with hints of Bruce Dickinson meets Geoff Tate vocal comparisons. The sound at The Ritz gave the band an edge that would otherwise have been lost or muffled out at Maximes, thus true appreciation for the bands melodic hard rock received a friendly reaction from the crowd.

Talk of sound problems, there was one flaw of the day which totally succeeded in ruining SEVEN WISHES set, I bet the guys were really gutted this year as the audience also failed to get into the bands sharp melodic hard rock, people were standing around unimpressed which is ironic as last year they rocked up a storm. Technical problems aside, Seven Wishes did their best to please and for me personally it was good to see them rock once again. After Seven Wishes we were treated to the mighty PRISONER (minus Tommy Deander due to ill health) who put on an energetic performance which the crowd lapped up with joy. I really enjoyed the way the two singers Geir Ronning and Piere Wensberg swapped their vocals parts and dueted with one another, they were clearly having so much fun and the crowd just loved it. I have to say that live these two singers compliment one another as both have immense vocal ranges which just totally blew me and everyone else away especially when during mid set we were treated to a stop/start medley of well known rock hits including 'Smoke On The Water'. I also have to add that adding to Prisoner's star quailty is their stand in guitarist who filled in for Tommy Denander. He did a marvellous job with the songs. This guy is a star in the making and his style in his own right is similar to that of Eric Johnson and Shawn Lane, so we are definitely talking shred quality here. The only bad pointer of the set was not the songs but instead the bass player, dressed in a black suite with black t-shirt he just stood lifelessly to the left of the stage and just did his thing, a few more smiles wouldn't go a miss next time mate. All in all Prisoner conquered today and I really hope they come back soon for more dates.

I spoke with Geir sometime after the gig and he informed how beautiful the song 'Desert Island' he and Tommy had recorded with Kee Marcello for the Jason Becker Tribute cd had come out and how moved and chuffed he was to be helping Jason. You could see the gleam of emotion in his eyes. DREAM HUNTER came on next, I caught the opening of 'Bad Attitude' from their new album when we decided to go and get
some food. We came back to hear the band hitting into the catchy 'Anyway You Want It'. The crowd seemed to enjoy them, and I'm gutted I missed them now - but food was needed more than music this time, you can't rock on an empty stomach!!!

Following Dream Hunter came the debut UK show for Doug Aldrich (Bad Moon Rising) and Keith St.John's BURNING RAIN who were definitely the heaviest and most bombastic of the day Burning Rain are the reason why I came to Z Rock this year and they rocked dudes!! They ripped into monsters from both their albums "Burning Rain" and "Pleasure To Burn" such as the frantic shred attack of 'Fireball', 'Love Emotion', the excellent 'Cherie Don't Break My Heart' and the fun packed crowd pleaser 'Sex Machine'.
I have to say that Keith St John is a wicked frontman who knows how to command the audience, we witnessed the odd Dave Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar inspired mid air jump from St.John to much amusement. St.John's voice is very similar to David Coverdale, and the songs hit home hard n fast thanks to his expertise and Aldrich's bombastic shredding, even on the ballads they keep the melodies and vocal harmonies tuneful and emotive. All to soon Burning Rain's set was over. An electric performance of which I hope we will get to see again next year.

And what about VON GROOVE then? Was that performance legendary or what? This was the bands long awaited debut show here in the UK and they were greeted with roars and cheers from the crowd right thoughout their set of which they churned out all the hits from 'House Of Dreams' and 'Should've Been Me' and 'Chameleon', the awesome newies 'Oxygen' and 'The Seventh Day' through to 'Once Is Not Enough', 'Mission Man', 'Guns Over London' and many others. They also teased the crowd with a minute long 'Two Nights In Tokyo' and a stunning drum solo to much amusement and also got the crowd singing along to an extended 'Once Is Not Enough' which was filled with plenty of crowd yelling chant's of "Na Na Na's" during the song's chorus, you know what I mean if you were there!! On one occasion singer Michael Shotton dived into the audience and sung a couple of numbers surrounded by the fans. He also climbed onto one of the speakers and really got the crowd pumped up as did guitarist Malden making this a classic performance indeed.

Then it was time for the headliners - Chicago's ENUFF Z' NUFF. Prior to Enuff Z' Nuff's set I had the pleasure of talking to Khalil Turk from Escape Music who is a very nice guy. He informed me that Departure are in the studio in New York working on a new album with new AOR god Timothy Lewis handling the mic. Khalil said the new album is due in September and there is talk of some Departure shows in the UK this or next year. It was also nice to finally meet writing partner Phil Ashcroft from Fireworks, as well as regular concert goers Graham Hatton, Mike Newdeck, Rob Evans, John from Loud1, Gez and Sue from Voltz Magazine and Sir Mark Alger himself who was running around all day like a blue assed fly. Anyway's, the minute Chip 'n Donnie 'n co hit the stage the crowd roared like maniacs as this was the bands first show here since 1996, and despite Chip hurting himself when he fell down a two foot hole behind the drum riser, he stood the show out to admirable effect. So respect where respect is due. The set consisted of all the old favourites like 'New Thing', 'Fly High Michelle', 'Time To Let You Go' and numerous songs pulled from all the bands albums. During 'Baby Loves You' the band were joined on stage by two sassy dancing girls with bizarre hairstyles, especially the purple haired one! (I'm sure they used to be in Tigertailz ha ha), they did their stuff to a joyous response and drool from us lads.

During mid set Ricky Parent performed a galloping drum solo of which he was joined by Chip. Together the pair performed a drum duet solo to much amusement. Over all having never seen Enuff Z'Nuff live before I was pretty pleased with the performance they gave, especially considering the fact that Chip had hurt himself. The set was only spoiled for everyone when some arsehole made an attempt to join the band on stage, but this was quickly diverted before he got a foot on there as the bouncers quickly piled in and sorted the idiot out. Why on earth do these people have to go and spoil things for everyone? Anyway the audience lapped up every minute of their set which ended a superb day of seven superb bands. Yeah Burning Rain were great and so were Enuff Z' Nuff. For me though the bands of the day simply had to be PRISONER
and VON GROOVE closely followed by CONTAGIOUS!! Let's hope we can see future events at The Ritz, I'm sorry but sound wise, compared to The Ritz, the sound in MAXIMES simply does not do justice to the bands who play there. Any future events such as this one, should from now on be held at The Ritz.

The Ritz is a great venue with a great clear sound, and the bands just sounded so much better, the atmosphere was great, the bands were great, the women were sexy, the beer flowed like wine and the venue's staff were friendly and very helpful and above all the show was very professionally organised and ran without any problems at all which made the day one to remember, and the start of a turning point for melodic rock's come back in the UK. See you at Z Rock part II!!!

DAVID T. CHASTAIN - DAVID T. CHASTAIN has just put the finishing touches on his first studio rock instrumental in 10 years. The Cd is called 'Rock Solid Guitar' and is a rip roaring affair that is not your typical shred instrumental Cd. David states "The Cd is closer to a heavy revved up SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN than neoclassical burn. It is much more improvisation than worked out arpeggios and other technical flair. This really is my personal favorite type of music. I am very happy with this release." Kramer
Guitars is running a series of ads to help in the promotion of this amazing Cd. The first full color page ad is in the current issue of Guitar Player Magazine (June issue). More are scheduled in the future. To catch a glimpse of the ad go to
http://www.diginetmusic.com/dtckramer.htm There are also rumors of a summer tour to coincide with the release but nothing official has been confirmed. Stay tuned.

VAINGLORY - VAINGLORY's monumental debut Cd '2050' has just been released in South America and will be released in Europe in May. Guitarist Corbin King, vocalist Ted Brasier, drummer Brian Harris and bassist Kevin Kekes have recorded a devastating piece of music. This concept album deals with what we can expect the world to look like in 2050 if we continue in the direction we are now heading. Corbin's mean rhythms and over the top leads sounds like a mixture of Mustaine & Malmsteen. Highly recommended. For further info go to http://www.leviathanrecords.com/vainglory.htm

CHASTAIN - There are rumors floating around on the internet about a new CHASTAIN band Cd so we are now here to set the record straight. David T. has completed the recording of all the guitars. Kate is working hard on the vocal tracks. Kate's husband drummer Larry Howe, formerly of Vicious Rumors, is currently rehearsing the tracks in San Francisco with bassist Dave Starr, also formerly of VR. No official release date has been scheduled for this Cd. Says David, "The music is really happening on numerous fronts. Kramer sent me one of their new Barettas guitars and the music just flowed out of it like a river. What is really weird is that the solos sound like they have been lifted out of the 'Instrumental Variations' era. It is strange that it happened that way but it is really cool stuff." We hope for the project to be completed within a few months with a release in late 2001.

SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN - SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN is still receiving rave reviews from 'Exotic Dancer Blues.' States David T. "As unusual as it may seem EDB has been the best reviewed Cd of my career! I guess it is such a departure that it freaks people out at first but then they hear where we are coming from and get into it. The music brings back a lot of good memories for all concerned. I talk with people in and out of the press all the time who just go on and on about how much they like the Cd. I guess I should have released this Cd 10 years ago!" David, along with drummer Dennis Lesh and bassist Kevin Kekes, should be hitting the road sometime this summer for selected dates and entering the studio late in 2001 for a 2002 release. Tentative title for the new Cd is 'Ladies of the Night' and will once again feature a scantily clad beauty on the cover in the Gents tradition! As always your can check out the latest at
http://www.southerngentlemen.com

TAKARA - Well it that time again to update everyone on the the status of the new Takara CD. The long awaited new CD contains nine new songs! Here is the track listing as follows...

3) Simple Man
4) Without You (Amy)
5) Tell Me

8) Dream of it All
9) Believe

I believe as a band we are so proud of this new music the there are no words to explain how we feel about this new CD, you will have to simply hear it for yourself ! This album is as good if not better than anything Takara has done before ! Everything just clicked on this CD. From Michael's INCREDIBLE vocals all the way down to the songs, and actual recording process itself. As of now we have no immediate plans for shows or when exactly the CD will be released, but we are currently seeking labels to release this CD through, and planning shows as well here in the U.S. and abroad. I believe most fans Takara will find a true breath of fresh air in this CD. This music has quality and charm that is very capitvating to say the least. Each person involved in the making of this CD put their heart and soul into the making of "Perception of Reality" I feel it could not have been planned better if we tried!

APRIL 11 - 2001

VAN STEPHENSON - A truly sad day it became when I heard that AOR legend VAN STEPHENSON died yesterday. The man who brought us 3 classic AOR albums in the 80s and wrote so many other songs for other bands and artists (such as GIANT, JUICE NEWTON and a lot of country performers). Unfortunately Van didn't win the battle of cancer and so we have to say goodbye from a legend. His music will live on forever and I certainly will never forget the man behind 'Suspicious heart' and the other classics.

RIP

The tracks were recorded last Sunday at SAE Studios NYC and the song came out really great.Ted says "It was for a great cause and it all came together wonderfully, it was so great to work with such professionals. We had so much fun doing it that we are considering doing more work together in the future! I was especially happy to get to work with Kenny Aaronson (Derringer, HSAS)who has always been one of my heros since I saw him playing with Rick Derringer in 1978 at Madison Square Gardens, and of course I brought my HSAS CD (one of my all time favorites!) to the studio and had him autograph it for me, he is the nicest guy!"

LIEGE LORD - LIEGE LORD guitarist PAUL NELSON will also contribute a song to the cd, whilst HAVEN'S Pamme will collaborate with Johnny Lima, Alex Masi and Lars Eric Mattsson on a verison of the DLR hit "Tell The Truth".

ARENA ROCK NEEDS A NEW VOICE….AND IT COULD BE YOURS

March 12, 2001 (Los Angeles, CA) The search is on to find a new vocalist to complete the lineup of the band that will usher in a new era of melodic hard rock to the airwaves of mainstream America. Offering a fresh take on time-honored influences like Van Halen, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, this as-yet unnamed band has already attracted the attention of the industry with their driving riffs, irresistible hooks, and a vital sense of urgency that only youth can bring. With an album's worth of material currently being recorded for a summer release and a high-concept promotional plan waiting to be set into motion, the only variable missing from the formula is the frontman to lead the charge.

Suitable candidates should be, without exception, in their early to mid 20s with a vocal range capable of handling both aggressive arena rockers and tender, heartfelt ballads. They must also be captivating live entertainers in the tradition of rock icons such as David Lee Roth, Jon Bon Jovi, and Sebastian Bach. The ability to play occasional rhythm guitar is a plus, but is not required. Because this is an actual band and not a "project," all newcomers will be fully encouraged to be an active part of the writing process, from which the band, as a complete unit, will select the cream of the crop. Furthermore, candidates should either be currently residing in the Los Angeles area or else be willing to relocate to it. Finally, and most importantly, they must have the hunger and dedication to make their dreams a reality.

Interested parties are invited to send an e-mail to SingerInquiry@aol.com or to send a package (including a CD/cassette and a recent photo) to:

TYGERS OF PAN TANG REVEAL NEW FRONTMAN:

Tygers Of Pan Tang have confirmed that vocal duties will be taken care of by new frontman TONY LIDDELL. Tony has had a long career within music and will be best known to many for his vocal duties on the debut Strangeways release. Prior to Strangeways Tony and Rob Weir had a project called Sergeant that nearly signed with two major labels, but due to many circumstances the band disbanded. 1987 Tony left England for the US and worked with many respected people including Jim Steinman.

After being so close to finally making it, Tony decided it was time to return home to the north east of England. During early January 2001 Tony was approached by Rob Weir re the demanding position as frontman for the legendary Tygers Of Pan Tang. The result a meeting the next day, immediately the two hit it off and once more Tony proved he was more than capable of holding the position. Rob Weir then called the Z office and sent some samples, the result the thumbs up from the label after only hearing the sample cdr for 5 minutes. The band will commence recordings during late March.

More News re the new Tygers frontman TONY LIDDELL will be posted soon. For now, read the reviews I just did on a two new releases by Edgy/Neat Records of TYGERS OF PAN TANG. Also next week reviews of the first 4 re-issues by the same label.
