LATEST AOR NEWS

UPDATED 5TH OF APRIL 2000

HYBRID ICE - Yesterday the sensational news reached us that the UK label Escape Music anounced that they are going to re-issue the first album of the legendary Pomprockband HYBRID ICE. Below you can read the official press release from Escape Music:

HYBRID ICE – HYBRID ICE

Release date: TBA

Catalogue Number: TBA Bar Code: TBA

Track Listing: On we go / Think it over / Magdalene / Wounded / Rock ‘n’ Roll Forever / Castle Walls / Heart of the night / Please tell Maryann / Do you believe in Rock ‘n’ Roll Bonus tracks: Looking Glass / Time will Tell

Rick Klinger – Drums & Vocals
Chris Alburger – Guitar, Keyboards & Lead Vocals
Toye Folke – Lead Guitar & Vocals
Bob Richardson – Keyboards & Vocals
Jeff Willoughby – Bass & Vocals

Hybrid Ice are a band that have gained a cult following, rather in the same way that Alpha Centauri did. They are based in Pennsylvania, USA and have released two albums to date. The second outing "No Rules" in 1987 was released on CD and most ardent fans picked up on it, but totally unaware of the existence of a debut back in 1982. To this day the debut has remained a hidden gem…..until now. What’s more, the whole recording has been given a full re-master and two bonus tracks added. Taking into consideration the album was recorded way back in 1982, the end result is astounding.

The production of the debut was by none other than John Palumbo, famous for his solo albums and as leader of the band "Crack the Sky". In fact the album should be set high on a pedestal for anyone loving that early eighties sound, the one we all love, that is with stabbing guitars, soaring synths and beautiful harmonies.

Moving on to the music, Hybrid Ice are all you would expect from a band from this era. Songs like "On we go" and "Think it Over" are huge anthems, which combine the appeal of Prism and Starcastle. The ballad "Magdalene" is a very important inclusion on the album; this particular song attracted the attention of Boston’s own Tom Scholz. He was so impressed by the song that he reworked it for the fourth Boston album "Walk on" in 1994, with Brad Delp at the mike stand. However, the original version on this album has an appeal all of its very own, beautiful.

If you like the pomp style of Angel, then "Wounded" is the tune for you, keyboards are dominant throughout the song. But the best is yet to come, "Castle Walls" has an introduction that is to die for and is a song that has huge comparisons to Styx. It is a total masterpiece of bombastic pomp rock, guitars and keyboards in perfect harmony and the vocal work is unbelievable. "Heart of the Night" has a pumping bass heart beat before bursting your blood vessels and "Please tell MaryAnn" is a ballad in the same vein as "Magdalene". Maybe another one for Boston to cover!

Along with a couple of straight out rockers from the original album we have the inclusion of two bonus tracks, "Time will tell" (an up-tempo ballad), and "Looking Glass" (Driving hard melodic rock). These two songs are very strong; "Looking Glass" is liable to set your speakers on fire such is its pace.

Hybrid Ice are band that had a following in their native Pennsylvania, the fever spread to Maryland and Virginia, now they are going to be unleashed on the rest of the world through Escape Music. Are you ready?

By luck of the draw both days are starting out with high energy, almost poppy at times, bands that are pretty much guaranteed to kick things off in the "party mode" style that this whole weekend will reflect.

Guild Of Ages have unfortunately pulled out of the show and have been replaced by top drawing Las Vegas local act Lazy Jane, featuring well known frontman Paul Lancia (Pair A Dice, Lancia). Lazy Jane will also help give the show a bit more of a "local" feel.

Our meeting with KOMP Radio, Las Vegas' only REAL rock station went phenomenally well. We're going to be running ads with them starting the first of May and from next week we will be involved in a website promotion with the station (www.komp.com). In fact, KOMP dj Laurie Steele began pushing UltraSound 2000 like crazy this past week - whoohoo!!!! Turns out that of all the brick and mortar radio stations that are on the 'net (in other words, not "internet only" radio) they're the most trafficked within North America and only second worldwide to a station in Europe.

KOMP will be spinning the acts playing UltraSound 2000 on their weekend specialty shows and, provided the hotel gives the thumbs up, the station will be doing a remote from UltraSound during Saturday's show.

Again a reminder, the $105 rates at the Alexis Park are only good until the 27th of April.

For those registering the day of the show, we ask that you please pay in cash, money orders or cashiers cheque. Sorry, no credit cards, personal cheques, poker chips or drink vouchers will be accepted - although chocolate WILL be considered ...(but probably rejected)

Short and sweet this time

Dave

VOODOO HILL - Frontiers Records & Now & Then Productions can finally confirm the signing of a worldwide deal with VOODOO HILL a project brainchild of the italian guitar hero DARIO MOLLO (who already worked with the likes of DON AIREY and TONY MARTIN on THE CAGE project last year).

Handling all vocal duties is none other than the mighty GLENN HUGHES who will sing - for the first time after a few years an entire album of smokin' hard rock music !

The album - which will is scheduled for release in early october 2000 - will feature the following ten songs: "Disconnected"; "Golden One"; "Spun in Lost Wages"; "24"; "Keep it to Yourself"; "Sensitive"; "Voodoo Hill"; "Black Leather"; "Just Another Monday"; "The Gypsy" (a Deep Purple cover taken from the classic "Stormbringer" album).

The other musicians guesting on the album will be Max Matis (bass), Roberto Gualdi (drums), and Dario Patti (keyboards). The music is to be described as "Solid Hard Rock" with diverse influences ranging from the classic PURPLE and WHITESNAKE to the VAN HALEN's "Balance" sounds.

On a personal note, FRONTIERS RECORDS is particularly proud to announce the signing of the first italian artist to its roster. Hopefully this will be just the first one of an italian renaissance also in classical hard rock after power metal !

UPDATED 20TH OF MARCH 2000

VAN HALEN - It's almost official that Diamond Dave has jumped back into the ranks of VAN HALEN. Negotiations are currently under way with the paper work being finalised as we speak. Apparently VH's record label WARNER BROTHERS, were the inspiration behind ROTH's big come back. It was a case of bring back Dave or get another label deal, after the ill fated "3" album with EXTREME vocalist Gary Cherone failed to make the impact that was expected. Roth rejoined VH briefly for the best of album, and after that episode completey backfired, both parties seem to have sorted out their petty squabblings. Watch
out for the first reunion dates this summer and also a new album, More news as we get it.

MOTLEY CRUE/THIN LIZZY - Motley Crue will tour Europe with the reformed THIN LIZZY (without Phil Lynott).

LILLIAN AXE - Have pulled out of Z ROCK 2000, and have been replaced by 24K.

SKYHIGH - Skyhigh are still recoding their new album, which will emerge sometime this year.

KIP WINGER - Releases a new album shortly titled "Songs From The Ocean Floor".

TED NUGENT - The Nuge has signed with Spitfire/Eagle records.

RATT - Portrait records have dropped Ratt.

MTM NEWS -

IGNITION the new swedish signing from MTM is in pre-work for the recordings of the debut album. Main man and leader of the project Peter Soderstrom, also known as Peck, previously was the main brain behind the 80´s Scandinavian band Frontiers who recorded one EP "Frontpage" which today is a collectors item for AOR fanatics all around the world (it was advertised in the legendary Shades sales column in Kerrang as: "These guys east Europe for breakfast!"). Peter just recently recruited singer Jan Johansen to the line up.
Among the songs to appear on the album will both be songs from outside writers as well as songs penned by Peck and some contributes from Johansen. Expect an October or November release !!

DIVING FOR PEARLS and producer David Prater is gearing up to start the recordings of the new Pearls album which without a doubt will be a one of the biggest highlights of this year in the melodic hardrock releases. Prater reports that he has been going through hours and hours of song demos and reharsal tapes to find good stuff from Danny Malone and company... And he found a bunch of superb stuff for sure !!
- But bear in mind, I always leave room for the unexpected to happen. "Give Me Your Good Loving" from the first album was just written days before the recordings of the debut started sez Prater. Songs that much likely will be featured on the upcoming album are: Lonely Is The Dark, The Truth Is, (a power ballad smash !!), Heaven Only Knows, All Shook Up and If I Only Knew.

The KHARMA album is now finally finished and the first reports we've gotten from various people who heard it is immense !! Everyone's just thrilled over the well produced and the phenomenal songs and performence on this album... Anyone into timeless rock a´la Queen, Kansas, Rainbow, Styx
or Foreigner, will love this album. The album is set for May release in Europe and Japan.

Believe it or not but the BRIAN MCDONALD album is now set for release by end of April or early May. The album has just been mastered and one of the albums that was announced at a very early stage from MTM is finally here as to be showcased for the world !!

HOUSE OF SHAKIRA is hard at work in the studio and will be finished with the recordings and mix sometime in mid April. The plan for release is June.

The MTM release schedule which for most time been rather approx, is starting to take shape for the spring releases and looks as follows:

March:

101 South

April:

Von Groove - Driving off The Edge
Brian McDonald - Wind It Up

May:

Raine - Peace (new title for this album)
Kharma - Wonderland
Storyteller - Corridor of Windows

June:

Joe Lynn Turner - tba
House Of Shakira - tba

Pomp legends AXE new album "the 6th one" might also be finished in time to get a June release. Bobby Barth and his troops is hard at work with the album in Denver as we speak. More updates on this will follow shortly...
