19 December, 2006

DEAR READERS,

How time flies. I hope this note finds you in good health and spirits.

I have been working hard in the past year, traveling, reseraching, writing and building a profession as a historian and art curator. Although I haven't spent much time updating this site, I have not forgotten about you -- my precious readers. Far from that, Once Upon a Time depends on your energy and support.

While perusing the work of many talented writers around the globe, I hope you will remember me, the ever optimistic editor, seated at her desk in a very cramped European apartment or across the Atlantic in a noisy walk-up steps away from the Flatiron building in New York.

I hope to update you with new material as we enter a new year. In the interim, please join me in re-reading the work of three exceptional writers from the U.K. --

Paul White's new poem
Gurpreet Gupta's arguments against creationism
The continuation of Jacob's Africa Diary

Thanks Paul White, Gurpreet Gupta and Jacob.

I will be flying back to NYC to work on new projects for the next several weeks before leaving once again for Europe. Should I not able to view the State of the Union message -- with the new Speaker of the House -- I'd appreciate any updates from my American friends.

Oh and yes, please mark your calendars for OUaT's 4th birthday: late December 2006-early January 20076.

Here's wishing you and yours a most enjoyable holiday season.

Peace, love and Messi,

Bonita

October 2005

DEAR READERS,

By the time you read this I have once again expatriated from the U.S. I am leaving my native New York City for 18 months as I have won a contract to work as a curator of drawings and graphics in a major museum in France.

Therefore this update of Once Upon a Time was conceived and structured across the Atlantic and in a very cramped European apartment ... and I am very pleased to present the work of three exceptional writers from the U.K. --

Paul White's new poem
Gurpreet Gupta's arguments against creationism
The continuation of Jacob's Africa Diary

Thanks Paul White, Gurpreet Gupta and Jacob.

I will return to New York briefly in November but will leave for Europe again before the month is over. As I will not be around long enough to personally inspect the White House leaks and its aftermaths, I'd appreciate any news from my American friends.

Oh and yes, mark your calendars for OUaT's 3rd birthday and next update: late December 2005-early January 2006.

Here's to a new begining!

Kindest regards,

Bonita

1 October, 2003

DEAR READERS,

After travelling on assignments for the past several months, it's wonderful to be home. As I write this, the last rays of the day shine brilliantly against the east wall of my Marseillaise apartment. On the wall there is a small picture, given by a gentleman friend during my recent trip across the Atlantic. The picture depicts a person in repos while his spirit slips out the window and dives into a sea of clouds.

I like to gaze at the picture for it reminds me of that rhetotical question: what is better - to travel or to arrive?

Rhetorical questions will never yield pramatic answers. That said, I hope you will peruse Once Upon A Time's latest updates and - after reading Heather M. Borstel's A Walk in Four Parts; Joanna Browning's A Favourite Place; 17 Syllables: a haiku reader and Lenni Brenner's hommage to Edward Said, the giant who travelled across the longitudes and latitudes of our conscience - draw your own conclusion.

Blessings,

Bonita

1 July 2003

DEAR READERS,

Q: Why does the fool throw the clock out the window?
A: Because he wants to see time fly.

Flown it had. And here's to Once Upon A Time because we are over 6 months old!

In this issue, you will see an enhanced front page, with the new Salon and Domain sections. Among new works by Jun-Lei, aca, Luba, you will, over the following months, begin to find features in foreign languages. I hope the polyglots among us will enjoy Yu Qing's essay About Orc..., an English translation of this very pensive article is forthcoming.

Many years ago in California, the jet-sets gave a reception party for the conceptual artist Chris Burden. Despite an opulent array of champagne, gourmet food, chocolate covered berries and a team of waiting staff in designer uniforms, the artist never appeared. The next day, a gossip columnist telephoned Burden.

"So why did you miss you own fabulous opening party?" The reporter asked.

"I didn't," replied the artist.

Chris Burden, it turned out, was one of the waiters but nobody had recognised him.

"And I had a great time serving my guests."

On that note, I raise my hat to you, dear readers and writers of my e-zine, Once Upon A Time.

Cheers,

Bonita

8 April 2003

DEAR READERS,

Everytime I look at my fountain pen I think of my father.

When I was 9 years old, I submitted a political essay to a major literary contest and won second price. I never claimed the award in person because I was underage and needed the joint signature of an adult. I tried to keep the news from my parents who were foreign correspondents and justifiably trying to block the children from "following their footsteps." Well you can't really wrap fire and dad claimed the award for me. That evening he came to my bedside, holding the fateful magazine in one hand and a fountain pen in another.

"I can't bring myself to buy you a sword but be careful you don't end up with inky pockets," he said.

That was 17 years ago and fate has it that my life is inseparable from 10 pt. type. When I am happy or lonely or indignant or just feel like "floating over ice cream castles in the ai"r or having my entire supply of blood sucked away by the power that be, I reach for that pen. "What is like to have your work published?" "Is there money in it?" "You must know our 'no politics' guideline!" "Is that you in your story?" "But you are so young--and a Woman!" "Where do you find the time!" Once, there was a carving over Carl Jung's doorway, "for those who knock, there will be an anwser."

Rationally speaking, there are really no life-and-death necessities that we write and, for that matter, the written word is universal. No writings are "too personal," or "not good enough." Remember that--and to put some lead in your pencil.

This season we have added more prose, commentaries and a new feature/gallery section which kicks off with Jeff White's moving poem A Natural Untidiness. Enjoy your read, and drop us a line.

Cheers,

Bonita

ONCE UPON A TIME MAGAZINE: Inaugural Message

Dear Friends,

Welcome and allow me to address the How-Where-What-Who-Why's of Once Upon a Time magazine.

It all started when I asked Heather for a story. A San Francisco story, to be exact. That was back in late spring, 2002; since then I have been receiving a narrative from her on a monthly basis. Somewhat like rent, or invoices, phrases of the moon, the continuation of 1001 Nights ...

The stories were too brilliant for one's eyes only. Hence the idea of a magazine.

I wrote up the guidelines and sent out inquiries. Jo loved the concept. So did Geert. And Jun. I-O-U's came from Denmark, Hong Kong, Montreal. And then Cecco sent in "May 2002," a work that could only be produced by one of Calcio Italia's last Romantics.

I worked, in between organizing art exhibits, writing and traveling on research trips, to design these pages. The magazine slowly took form. I gave it the only name I know, Once Upon a Time...
