SLANE CASTLE |
In early July, Joe Wall cheekily sent each member of U2 a copy of their superb debut album Hi-Lo with a request to consider The Walls for their Slane concert in September. It was a long shot but it paid off - U2 really liked the album and within a couple of weeks The Walls received a phone call from Principle Management to say they were on the bill. Bono described The Walls as his wildcard and they didn't let him down. They went on stage after Dara at 1.55pm in front of an estimated 50,000 people. They stormed Slane from the opening chords of New Born Baby right through to Brewing Up A Storm (dedicated to the Irish Soccer team) and Some Kind of A Girl (dedicated to the late Uaneen Fitzsimons) with a hit-packed set. The set order was as follows: NEW BORN BABY ESCAPE NIGHT I CALLED IT A DAY HI WIRE BROKEN BOY GET WILD BONE DEEP METROPOLIS BREWING UP A STORM SOME KIND OF A GIRL After the last song, the crowd roared for more but unfortunately the band had only been allocated a 45 minute set. We'll have to wait for the next Walls gig.... The gig was summed up by an entry from 'Shane' in the guestbook - 'saw the walls at slane, top drawer stuff. fuckin deadly!!!!' I couldn't put it better myself!! Rumour - Although Rory Doyle reluctantly had to forfeit his Ireland/Holland match ticket, he received some consolation when they ended up partying with the Irish soccer team in Lillie's Bordello later that night. |
