Oct. 14 2002 Went out to my spot in Greene Co. (Fairgrounds Rd.area) for my first time this season this evening and saw 2 groups of does with yearlings. They were coming to the beanfield that runs up to the road. The smaller field in the back is also planted with beans this year. It seems to me that when the fields are planted with beans instead of corn that I see more deer on the property. If the does stay around they will attract the bucks. I am hoping to see the 10 pointer that I saw 2 years ago, he should be a monster by now. I expect any day now that the beans will be picked. Oct. 15 2002 Went back out to Greene Co. and tucked into a fencerow along the back beanfield. Around 6:30 I heard a snapping sound and looked through the brush to see a gimpy legged doe and a yearling ripping bean pods off of the stalks. When she got within 15 yards of me she must have winded me. She snorted and they both took off. Oct. 16 2002 Back out at Green Co. again. Did not see anything until I walked back to the van. Spooked a couple a deer behind the Appleman's barn. Note: The Appleman passed away during the summer. He had a heart attack while playing softball. He was in his 70's!!! Oct. 22-24 2002 Craig and I went down to Hocking Tues. afternoon through Thurs. morning. This was the last week of turkey season that you could hunt with a shotgun. We planned on bow hunting for deer in the mornings and evenings and would hunt turkeys with a shotgun during the day. Tuesday afternoon I lugged my climbing stand up the ridge north of the campsite and hunted a head of a ravine on the northern slope. Craig hunted the east end of the ridge. I didn't see any deer movement but almost had a shot at a Tom turkey at 15 yards but he didn't present a shot. Craig had a doe and two yearlings come up behind him and when he turned around to see they spotted him and moved off. Wednesday was a bust. We didn't see any deer or turkey movement. Thursday morning Craig jumped a doe a 2 yearlings and they ran towards me and stopped in front of me about 35 yards. They stood there for 10 minutes or so and looked back in Craig's direction. They finally calmed down and meandered away. It appears that the bucks are not yet moving and the beginning of the rut has not started yet. We plan on going back down the first week of November. Oct. 27 2002 Went Sunday afternoon with Bill "Weebe" Davis to a new spot in Shelby Co. We looked over the property about a week ago and saw lots of trails, rubs and scrapes. We busted two small deer while walking in. We both stayed until dark and didn't see any deer! Oct. 30 2002 I went out to Fairgrounds Rd this morning. Got there a little late, (I had to go back home to get my bow!). Anyway when I walked down the hill there were 2 does and 3 yearlings in the picked beanfield. I watched them for awhile until they went into the back beanfield. I then slipped up to the back beanfield and saw 3 of the 5 still eating the left over beans. They eventually left and bedded down in the thick stuff. I was hoping to see a buck or two checking the does, but noooo. I eventually made it to my stand and didn't see a thing the resr of the morning . Went back out to Fairgrounds this afternoon. Did not see anything until I after I lowered my bow and was unclipping my safety harness when one took off behind me! I don't know where it came from, the woods is wet and quiet, honeysuckle everywhere! Oct. 31 2002 Back out at Fairgrounds again this afternoon. Didn't see a thing! Things should be heating up as far as the rut goes. Usually the first two weeks of Nov. the bucks are after the does looking for love. The spot in Greene Co. has a few does to attract the bucks. I'll keep going there from time to time between my up and coming trips to Hocking and Scioto counties. |
