I hunted the property on Trebein Rd. again this morning. The wind was from the NE again so I sat down under the maple tree in the SE corner of the larger beanfield. I didn’t see any deer but at 8:40 a coyote came out into the beans, hiked its leg and took a leak. It then went back to the edge of the field and made a deposit and then it went back the same way it came… |

East winds again today. I went to the maple tree in Greene Co. for the last two hours of daylight. The beans have not yet been picked. About 5:35 I heard a noise to my left in the beanfield. As I peered through the honeysuckle I unhooked my bow from the limb. A few moments later I could barley make out a buck on the edge of the beanfield. He slowly took a few steps and disappeared into the brush to my left. I think it was the same small-racked buck that I have seen before. I grunted and tried using the can call a few times to lure him back but it didn’t work. I even tried using the rattle bag lightly with no response. Either he made me or he wasn’t looking for love. |

I went out to Greene Co. about 3:30 and hunted out of my treestand at the east end of the property. It was rainy and the wind was coming out of the west. At 5:30 it was getting too dark to see in the woods so I got down and headed toward the small beanfield. When I was about 30 yards from the field a doe snorted at me, turned and bounded through the beans and into the brushy hillside. About 5 second later I heard 4 or 5 grunts and then saw the 4 pointer follow the doe grunting all the way. I waited for about 10 minutes at the edge of the field to see if a larger buck would follow up the other two but none did. |

I had an exciting hunt this afternoon in Shelby Co. I hunted some property that is bordered on the west side by a creek and on the east side by woods and a greenfield. As I walked across the foot bridge over the creek a doe jumped out of the creek bottom and headed for the woods. A few steps later another deer jumped out of the bottom and followed the first one. I proceeded north paralleling the creek until I hit the greenfield then I turned back toward the creek to look for a spot to set up my climbing stand. The wind was coming out of the east. While searching for a good tree to put up my stand a small buck and another deer of unknown gender jumped up out of the cover on the other side of the creek and also headed towards the woods. I found a tree along the creek that overlooked a trail that was coming from the other property to the north. That trail forks about 30 yards before entering the property. The other part of the fork goes east to the corner of the field. I finally got situated in the tree about 3:30 and faced into the east wind. At 4:00 I caught movement to my left on the other fork about 40 yards away. It was a big 8 point buck with thick white tines and he was walking briskly heading toward the field. There were other smaller deer behind him. I grunted at him and he stopped. A few seconds later he started to take a few steps towards the field and I grunted again. He paused and started to continue on again. I then pulled out the can call and tipped it a few times and he stopped but at that instant a little half-rack buck runs towards me and stops on the trail by me at about 8 yards. Meanwhile the big buck starts walking again and this time he makes it to the edge of the field and paws at a scrape. I hit the can call again and the big buck doesn’t pay me any attention. I figured that I didn’t have anything to lose so I pulled out my rattle bag and start rattling while grunting with the tube at the same time. The little buck below me then takes off and at the same time the big boy high tails it across the field. I could see that his rack was well past his ears. He was defiantly a wall hanger. After they both took off a doe and a yearling’ that were with the little buck, hung out behind my stand for about a half hour. They eventually meandered back up the creek and I could hear them splashing around off and on for twenty minutes or so. At 5:00 I noticed deer moving out in the field. I could not tell how many but it appeared to be 3 or 4 and one looked to be a buck. At around sundown I heard the doe and yearling splashing in the creek again. I then saw one of then come out of the creek onto the other bank. It trotted off through the brush but within a few seconds it ran back to the creek and crossed it. Suddenly they both were running as if being chased and in an instant they came running past me on the trail in front of me. I readied my bow hoping that a buck would be in pursuit. After waiting about 10 minutes it was getting too dark so I called it a day and headed for home. |

I hunted our Meade lease down in Pike Co. Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Saturday I hunted west of the road that separates the lease and had a little 8 pointer come in at 8 yards at about 5:00. I spotted him coming up the hill to my right and had to grunt call off and on several times to get him to come in. |
Sunday morning I hunted the east side of the lease and watched another hunter on the adjacent property shoot a deer with a crossbow. I also called in another small 8 pointer after spotting him around 9:15. The other guys on the lease saw several small bucks. No one observed any chasing or rut activity. |
