...Missed one tonight!!! I went back out to Greene Co. and noticed that the beans and corn had finally been picked. I decided to check out the cornfield to see if the deer were hitting it just before dark. I cut a path through the honeysuckle and then walked through a long and narrow grown up field until I came to the cornfield. I then set down at the property line at the cornfield. It wasn’t but 20 minutes later I heard something walking through tall weeds. Soon I noticed antlers and I readied my bow. Within seconds a buck with a high rack appeared. He was walking from my left to right with his nose to the ground. He then suddenly stopped and busted me. I took the shot and he ducked at the sound of the bow and did a 180 and was gone. I heard my arrow rattle in the brush behind the buck! Although I was almost positive that I had missed I checked for signs of a hit and also followed the trail where he took off. I didn’t find any blood or hair anywhere. Oh well, that’s bowhunting! |

I woke up to the 4 o’clock alarm and left the house at 5 and drove the hour trip to Shelby Co. By 7 I had found a tree in the woods close to where I had seen travel on a previous hunt. I wasn’t there long when I noticed deer moving 100 yards east of me. They were traveling near a spot where I had my treestand set up on an earlier trip! I stayed on my stand until 1:00 and saw a total of 2 small bucks, 4 does and 6 yearlings, including the twins in the photo. After a short lunch break and nap back at the van I moved my stand to the east end of the woods. I didn’t see any deer all afternoon. |

I made the hour trip to Shelby Co. again this morning. The wind was coming out of the NE so I carried my climbing stand back to the east end of the woods and set up west of a trail. Things were quiet until about 8:45 when 5 deer came running from the bedding area into the woods about 75 yards west of me. There were two bucks, a small 8 point and an even smaller 6 point. The 8 point was hounding a doe and occasionally he would chase off the smaller buck. This went on for about 10 minutes then the bigger buck mounted the doe. Soon the doe and the 8 point took off back towards the bedding area while a doe and her yearling and the smaller buck headed towards the SE corner of the woods. There must be a trail there because I have seen deer in the past head that way. They probably exit the woods in that area. Later at 10:00 I spotted through the timber another small buck on the move in the field to my east. He entered the woods at the head of a drawl and moved quickly into the bedding area. I stayed in my stand until 1:00 then I took a break and moved my stand to the NW end of the woods along the creek where I saw that big 8 pointer a few hunts back. I spooked an antlerless deer while setting up my stand. Around 5:00 two button bucks came out of the creek bottom and walked by my stand. Behind them was the mother doe. She either winded me or spotted me as she walked up the hill and she did a quick 180. The two little guys just kept going on their merry way, not realizing that mom was not behind them. After about 5 minutes they returned looking for their mom and filtered back down to the creek bottom. That was it for the day. |

I hunted for a few hours out of my treestand in Greene Co. this morning. Only saw one little 4 point buck. He came from the small cut beanfield and was on the prowl with his nose to the ground. I left about 9:30 when the wind picked up from the ENE. |

I hunted Greene Co. for two hours this morning. As I made my way through both of the picked beanfields, just before daybreak, deer were snorting at me. I usually wait until I can see if any deer are out in the fields before I cross but this morning I wanted to get back to the cornfield to see if any deer were still feeding. I wanted to determine where they go when they leave the field. I tucked under the honeysuckle near the area that I missed the buck from the other day. At 7:00 I heard footsteps in the frost covered picked cornfield about 30 yards in front of me to the north. Soon a little 4 pointer appeared on the edge of the cornfield. He had his nose to the ground and zigzagged across the cornfield to a wooded finger that extends out into the field. About an hour later I noticed him back near the scrape where I had shot at and missed the buck last week. He again headed out across the cornfield. I gave up about 9:15 and checked out the spot where I lost my arrow last week on the shot at the buck. I found it and confirmed again that I had cleanly missed him. I also checked out a tree to put up a stand in the future. This area seems to have more deer activity than where my stand is now. |

I hunted out of my treestand in Greene Co. this afternoon. At 5:10 I heard movement to my right in the thick honeysuckle below me. I thought it was a squirrel. Soon I saw a young deer about 15 yards from my tree. Then a doe and another young deer show up. They walked behind me and when they got down wind of me the doe looked up. Soon I had three sets of eyes staring at me and I am 22 foot up. They did the stomp and head fake thing for twenty minutes before they moved on. |
