June 3-8, 2007:  Lake St. Clair

June is the time for Smallmouth bass fishing.  Once again Tim, Dan, Jeff and I made the trip to Lake St. Clair for 5 days of fishing in the shallow, clear lake. We hooked up with Heavy and a co-worker of his, Bob Delong, who both have trailers up on the lake.  The weeds in the lake were not up as high as last year and the lake level was up around 10-12 inches.  Our deep water areas did not produce.  Although we had to search around to pinpoint them we found the Bronzeback fighters in their usual spawning areas in the 3-6 foot depths. The prime baits were Senko type lures and Strike Kings Zulu.  Tubes and spinnerbaits also caught fish.

Several big Smallmouth bass were caught.  Personal best were:
Dan…… 5 lb. 2 oz...
Tim…… 4 lb. 8 oz…
Heavy…. 5lb. 6 oz…
Steve….. 5 lb 8 oz…
Jeff……..
???????....Allegedly caught one around 5 lbs., but unfortunately it was not documented with a picture so there is some question among us whether or not he actually did catch one that big!

Heavy also hooked and landed a big pot-bellied Carp that tip the scales at just over 20 pounds.   Judging by his picture it was a fish that he was extremely proud of!!!
DAN 5lb 2 oz
HEAVY 5 lb. 6 oz.
HEAVY 20 lb. 1 oz. Carp
STEVE 5 lb. 8 oz.
TIM 4lb. 8 oz.

I went back up to LSC on the 18th of June with Craig and Ron and we fished out of Tim’s boat.  We tried our usual spots that produced two weeks earlier but the Smallmouth were a lot smaller.  Our biggest fish for the trip were around 3.5 pounds.  We caught fish from 4-5 foot of water all the way out to the 15 foot depths.  The best action was on the last day at the Simms Hole around the log.  The Weedstake and the Sandbar held fish but most of them were on the smaller side. We ran into rain, winds, and hot to cool weather in the few days that we fished.  Ron had success using the drop-shot rig while I found that the pumpkin grub using the sweep method worked for me.  Craig caught fish on numerous baits as well.
