June 24-26, 2007: Lake St Clair Anchors Away!!! Dan, and his two sons, John and Kyle, along with their Uncle Tim made a late June trip to Lake St Clair. It was 9 year old Kyle’s first time to Canada and for fishing on the big shallow lake. The wind conditions did not allow them to cast on the weed edges so they dropped the anchor and sat over the deep side of the Weedstake hole. They found a school of Rock Bass and John and Kyle kept pretty busy for a few hours. They even had enough to clean and bring home for a fry. Kyle caught his first Smallmouth and also landed the biggest one of the trip with a monster that weighed 3 ˝ pounds. He caught it on a Smoke Stubbie tube near the Bomber hole. (See picture). Just like his brother and sister before him, with some coaching from Dad, he was able to hold his own with the Lake St Clair veterans. |

August 5-7, 2007: LSC Dan and I along with two of his kids, Kyle and Anna , went back up to Lake St. Clair for a few days of fishing. It rained almost all the way up to the lake and we were wondering if we would be able to fish at all that afternoon. Luckily, not too long after we arrived the rain stopped and we were able to launch the boat and get in a few hours of fishing before taking a late dinner. |

We didn’t want to travel very far with the short amount of time that we had, combined with the threat of more rain, so we headed out to fish the area south of Grassy Island. We drifted with tubes around the Bomber and Zulu spots and Kyle was the first to land a Smallmouth bass. The action picked up during the third or fourth drift when we all suddenly had bites about the same time. I quickly tossed the marker buoy over while we struggled to get our fish in. Dan lost his but both Kyle and Anna landed Smallmouth bass while I hauled in a nice size Rock bass. |

After taking a few pictures we repeatedly made drifts past the marker buoy and caught either a Rockie or a Smallie every time. When we eventually fine tuned the area around the buoy we discovered that the fish were being caught off of a long sunken log that had weeds growing all around it. We marked the spot on our GPS before we left for the evening. All in all I think that we kept 12 Rock bass and threw back almost as many Smallmouths. |

Monday morning we went back to the sunken log and caught a few more Rockies and Smallies and then headed to the Weedstake. After catching only a few there we tried deeper water with very little success and then headed to the Sandbar. The fish were there! We could see the Smallmouth cruising along the weed line. We caught about 8-10 at that spot before heading in for dinner. In the evening we went back out to the bar and caught 6-8 more. I hooked and boated a 4 lb 13 oz Smallmouth with a lot of help from my net man, Kyle. |

Tuesday morning it rained until shortly after noon. We finally got out about 1:00 and tried a few spots before making our way to the Johnson River. We stopped at a spot in the river called the Killpecker and caught about 6-8 Smallies. When that area panned out we traveled up the river to an area known as the Hog Pen. We picked a few more Smallies off of there as well as a couple short Largemouth bass. |
All in all it was a productive trip. Kyle and Anna both caught a number of Smallmouth bass and each of them landed one over 3 pounds. They had a good time watching movies in the evenings and during our rain delays. We even caught enough fish for a fish fry Tuesday night! Not bad for the “Dog Days” of August! |
