HOUGHTON LAKE, MICHIGAN pg. 1 of 3
It all started back in 1970 when some of the boys from the old neighborhood wanted to go on a fishing trip over Memorial Day weekend. They decided to go to a lake where one of the guy's parents took them on a family vacation. That lake was Houghton Lake which is located in the northern part of lower Michigan.
In those early years we mainly fished out of 14-foot aluminum boats with 10 hp motors.
The lure of choice was the Mepps Minnow Comet which was fished over the shallow weedbeds. We  would catch rock bass, crappies, largemouth bass and an occasional walleye. In the mid '70s the beetle spin became the popular lure and was easier to fish over the weeds.

But by the 1980s we had bigger boats and better tackle. By then most of us took up fishing the 1/8 oz black marabou jig which we incorporated from our trips to Toledo Bend in Texas. The group had grown to 12-14 guys, some of which did not know much about fishing. They were taught by the others with more experience.
