Frequently Asked Questions - Part Three

16. Do They Shed? Yes! They are NOT "hypoallergenic" and were
NOT created for humankinds’ convenience. Truthfully, there is no such thing as
a  non-allergenic dog. Dog breeds that are manufactured to be hypoallergenic
will still produce allergens, but because of their coat type, will typically produce less than others.People who suffer from severe allergies and asthma will still be affected by a hypoallergenic dog.

Having seasonal shedding is perfectly normal in breeds who have a double coat, which is "fur" not “hair” as manufactured in poodles; however, they do not shed like a Husky in clumps. The Canaan Dog has a double coat and a layer of thick, downy fur next to their skin under the top coat called "undercoat". The undercoat acts as an insulator and grows deep and dense in the Winter only to be shed out
and discarded in Spring and Summer. This pariah stock has  survived for over
4000 years without man's cosmetic intervention -they must know what is best:-)

Feeding a raw diet is one way to minimize shedding. The raw diet we follow is rich in fatty acids, which helps keep the skin moist and supple. To insure the least amount of shedding, feed a high quality diet and supplement with additional anti-oxidants vitamins such as A and E as well as Omega3 and Omega 6 Fish oils. These Supplements will help maintain a shiny coat and keep shedding to a minimal – like a soft snowfall. Brushing the coat once a  week, will also help bring the oils produced at the skin down each shaft of hair to coat the hair shaft with protective lipids.

17. Do They Have Grooming Requirements?
The Canaan Dog is an impeccably clean dog. Like their cousin, the Basenji, they clean themselves like a cat . Very fastidious with their hygiene; seldom does one need to give a shampoo unless rolling in sheep or cow pooh isn’t to your liking; even then their coat seems to be “scotch guarded”. A dry-mouthed dog – meaning- no drool – with no “traditional” doggie odour.

18. How Big are they? A Canaan Dog is a medium sized, well balanced, muscular and square dog resembling the wild dog type. There should be a definite strong distinction between the sexes. The CKC standard allows males to range from 20-24 inches in height; weight 45-55 lbs. Females can range from 19-23 inches; weight 35 to 45 lbs. He is without extremes and should be well proportioned. This was a dog that was nature’s design: built to race like the wind and consume a frugal diet. Keeping him lean and agile will make him more comfortable and healthy.

19. Is the Canaan a "watchdog" or "guard" dog?
The Canaan Dog’s natural tendency toward self-preservation lends himself more toward a watchdog as opposed to a guard dog.  A watchdog mentality differs in that watch dogs only alert their owners when they see an intruder approaching. They rarely attempt to injure a possible assailant; however, Canaan Dogs are known to
“circle” an intruder to keep them from escaping until their pack leader takes over the situation. A Canaan Dog is sociable and loyal to thier owners and is a very reliable "watchdog".

20. Are they Cat aggressive with family pets?
In general, if a Canaan puppy is raised  with cats they can be taught
to respect the feline family pet living in the household. However, some CDs who posess a high prey drive may like to play "chase the cat". In this case, early supervision and "leave it" commands need to be reinforced with the Canaan puppy. We know of several Canaan Dogs that live comfortably with cats.

20. Is the Canaan Dog an appropriate breed for first time dog owners? Yes and No. Yes, if the newcomer is willing to read and research about canine behaviour in advance. Educating oneself about canine behaviour will only benefit the new owner and better prepare them for the challenges of a new puppy. The Canaan puppy and adult will easily take  advantage of a soft handler. If your Canaan dog sees that you are a directionless wimp in need of some authority, he'll happily step into the leader position to whip you into shape.
Canaan Dogs are all about hierarchies and as far as they're concerned, somebody's got to uphold that top dog position in case you guys get attacked by another pack. It's a dog eat dog world, after all!

In short, if you are not going to be the “pack leader” in your household, then he will! Training a well-mannered dog takes time and commitment. If you don't  have  the time and desire to raise a dog that will become an enjoyable companion, then a dog is not for you.

Canaan Dogs are “unmanufactured”  by man. They have natural dog characteristics that have allowed them to survive for over 4,000 years, which includes their sharp eyes, their acute hearing, and their keen sense of smell - and most importantly, their need to be in a pack! To your Canaan, you and everyone else in your household are in his pack, for lack of a better pack.
