Middle East Meets North!
Two rare breeds in Canada meet
November 27, 2008

Our new Alberta farm is home to many inhabitants. Deer, moose, coyotes, wolves, prairie dogs, and a variety of birds share our 160-acre land. Several predatory animals also inhabit our beautiful quarter section - bears, cougars and wild boar oh my!

Our Canaan crew are superb watchdogs and herding dogs  but lack the drive to attack large predators. Their capabilities as an "alarm" dog are exceptional and they will alert their master to signs of danger. The Canaan has "self-preservation" on his mind first and foremost, which is why he has survived for well over four thousand years in the harsh desert terrain.

After much thought and research, we have decided to add a
Karelian Bear Dog (KBD) to help protect our land and keep the large predators at bay. A KBD is fearless by nature and will not yield an oncoming threat. He will defend his territory and his master to the very end. By nature, he is a hunting dog  and will  alert his master to the presence of game. He has been used successfully to "tree" bears and will attack if the predator poses a threat to his surroundings. His sharp sense of smell has also been used effectively in locating wounded deer.

Before heading out west, we met with Anna Grawbarger of Grawpaw's Kennel - a well-respected KBD breeder from Restoule, Ontario. We were delighted to meet her two beautiful KBD girls,
Suopellon Pepita's Pitsi and her sister Suopellon Pepita's Piki "Anu". Both Anu and Pitsi were friendly and outgoing and enjoyed meeting us and our Canaan duo. Pitsi introduced us to the finnish sport of kicksledding  - to see pics of the middle east meets north encounter, visit Anna's site at http://www.simplesite.com/grawpawsbeardogs

We are looking forward to adding a KBD pup to our pack from Anna in spring 2009!
