Preparing For Your New Arrival

Essentials for Your New Canaan Dog pup

The following is a checklist of items that will help your Canaan pup make the transistion to his new home.
FEEDING

Two stainless steel bowls. One for water and the other for food. They are easy to clean, healthier and indestructible. RESIST the urge to buy those cute porcelain bowls. Breeders will provide information on the raw diet for your pup.

TRAINING

Collar & Leash. We will offer advice on these items as your pups grows.

Healthy Treats. No rawhide or pig ears ever! We know friends mean well, but please discourage visitors from bestowing these particular gifts on your pup. And always remember, that Treats are NEVER free – your pup must always work for these. Breeders will provide further details in your puppy manual. Here are some natural based treats we recommend:

-
Benny Bully’s – natural liver treats. A healthy and effective treat for training. Both our Canaans LOVE these!
-
Charlie Bears – comes in Liver or Cheese and Egg.
- Small bits of Cheese are always good!

Note:
If you can’t find these items, we can help suggest some other healthy alternatives. Also, if you are into baking, we do have some great homemade recipes that can be a fun way of getting the whole family into the kitchen!

GROOMING

Dog Bristle Brush. Your Canaan pup should be brushed once weekly. Brushing your dog with a Dog Brush will also spread the natural skin oils throughout your pet's coat which helps to keep it healthy and maintain a shiny look along with the omegas, which we will outline in your raw diet menu.
Dog Nail Trimmers. When nails grow long, clip one a day.

Note:
since the Canaan is a natural dog, no trimming or altering of the coat is necessary –thank god!

COMFORT

Crate. A crate is an excellent aid in helping to housebreak your new pup. It also provides a “safe” haven when you are not able to supervise him. The crate should be large enough for the pup to stand up, turn around, and lay down. If the crate is too big then the pup can sleep in one spot and eliminate in another. Remember the idea is the pup will not soil where it sleeps. We will provide dimensions of the crate well before you pick him up. A Crate will help him feel secure because it will become his own little “bedroom”, a place that he can go to rest when he is tired out. It will also help to teach him how to wait to eliminate since they do not want to soil their beds. If he does have an accident in his crate, NEVER punish him. The crate should always be associated with good things! If an accident has occurred, he may have been left there too long. You will need to shop for a larger one, later, as he grows. Please refer to the article on crate training in your breeder’s puppy manual for tips on how to effectively crate train your pup. The manual will be provided when you pick him up.

Towel or blanket that carries the scent of his littermates and dam. The breeder will supply you with this item. Keep this towel in the crate with your new puppy for added comfort.

Soft plush dog toys that has the same or similar colour/markings as his littermate and dam. Breeders will inform you in advance when we know which lucky pup will be going home with his new loving family!

PLAY ITEMS and ITEMS to help ease teething

Lots of Chew toys! These will help with your pup’s teething, and help keep him occupied and away from items that you don’t want him to chew.
Kong. A Kong filled with peanut butter or small bits of cheese can keep your puppy busy for hours.
Soft doggie toys and puppy tennis balls. The pup can grab, chase, and toss these, and they won’t hurt his tender mouth. Just as with young children, you'll want to avoid little pieces that can be easily swallowed. All puppies go through a teething stage and it is helpful for them to have something safe to chew on other than your new shoes.

Note:
the puppy tennis balls are smaller than your average tennis ball. Most pet supply stores carry these.

And most importantly, keep lots of LOVE and PATIENCE on hand!
