DOLPHINS
Family Delphinidoe
These smaller cousins of the whale live in social
groups as large as a hunderd members, and raise
their young cooperatively.They communicate with each
other in a large vocabulary of whistles,
groans, and clicks. Dolphins are swift, powerful
swimmers. They propel themselves through the
water by up-and-down motions of their tails, and
they use their front flippers for balance and
steering. They often roll, jump, and leap in the
water and seem to enjoy accompanying ships
with playful curiosity as they ply the seas. Most
dolphins swim at about 18 miles per hour, but
when motivated (like when chasing an especially
tasty fish) they can swim much faster for short
periods of time. Dolphins usually hunt for food in
groups, which gives them some protection from
killer whales and sharks. There's safety in numbers.
Dolphins have the ability to find things through
sound, known as echo location or sonar. The
rapid clicking sounds they make hit whaterver's
around them, and then bounce back giving the
dolphin a guick update on it's surroundings. Their
extra-sensitive sonar can even detect a tiny
minnow from ten feet away. The little guys hardly
have a chance.
