The singles spree continues through August, so, in no particular order...
The Cardigans attempt to follow up the worldwide smash of Lovefool with the new single Your New Cuckoo. It's trademark Cardigans, which means it's sweet, light, poppy and near perfect!
Two up and coming bands released some cool offerings this month. Firstly Travis with Tied to the 90's, then Stereophonics with A Thousand Trees, both minor pop gems. We shall see who can rise the highest. Stereophonics seem to have narrowly clinched it chartwise, for the moment at least...
If you'd told me a few years ago that Chumbawamba would one day scrape the underside of the number 1 slot, I and many others would have sniggered and gone back to our Boo Radleys records. But there it is, Tubthumping, drinkers anthem and annoyingly catchy singalong tune in one.
Since the barely noticeable break-up of Belly, Tanya Donelly has become a solo artist, and releases the single Pretty Deep this month. As you might expect, it's a lilting, melodic affair and pretty brilliant! Another top tune coming from the depths of old indie is Cornershop's Brim Full of Asha, a simple perky pop tune that's sure to lodge in your head for weeks.
Once again, a surprisingly good single comes from an ex Take Thatter: I Am What I Am, by none other than Mark Owen. Funnily, despite being his best it's his smallest hit, charting in the lower 30's instead of his usual reserved parking spot in the top ten.
It's about time people began taking a bit more notice of Hurricane #1! This month sees the release of their third, and perhaps best single, Chain Reaction. They have easily proved themselves to be brilliant peddlers of classic rock tunes as good as any have ever been, and Andy Bell is climbing in everyone’s estimation as a great guitarist! So go out and buy it!
Jointly receiving the single of the month award with Hurricane #1 are the late entry Bently Rhythm Ace with the quirky dance pop of Bently's Gonna Sort You Out. Just listen to it!
