March made a quiet start after the busy beginning to the year. We were
for a while plauged with those Cartoon characters of pop, No Doubt,
hanging onto the number one single spot with great tenacity before being dislodged by the
Spice Girls double-barreled Comic Relief single
Mama/Who Do You Think You Are. Enough of that though, more
exciting news came when Bernard Butler signed solo to
Creation Records (see the News Section for more details).
Listeners to Radio 1's evening session were treated to an early listen of the forthcoming
Primal Scream single Kowalski.
The single will hit the shops in May, and is a brilliant return to the sound of
Screamadelica
Pop single of the month so far goes to new teenage kickers Symposium
for the single Farewell to Twilight, into the charts at #15 like a...
well, a slow bullet.
Towards the end of the month we were to witness Arab Strap's latest
discreet move in their quest for world domination with the release of The Clearing
as a single. I'm still not really sure how popular they are, but I guess I'll keep an eye on the
lower reaches of the top 50 just in case. A much more surefire hit is North Country Boy
which heralds The Charlatans return to the fray. True, it may sound
more than a little like their '95 single Just When You're Thinking Things Over,
but it's still a great tune and hey, if it aint broke, don't fix it!
It may seem a little early yet for "here comes summer!" type anthems, but that hasn't stopped
Dinosaur Jr. with their new single Take a Run
at the Sun. Taken from the Grace of My Heart soundtrack the
single comes on like a typical Beach Boys surf-fest before J Mascis' drawled
vocals slip inbetween the flashes of harmony and ringing guitar. Sneaking in right at the end of the month
we see Supergrass making their return after a long absense with the
single Richard III, a much rockier affair than past efforts but still
keeping in with the cool and top tunes that defined them.
