Indie bands are getting shafted all the time!
So what's new??? Some of you may know about royalties that bands apparently get when their songs get played on the radio. Well the reality of it is that the people that are getting all the royalties are the huge superstars, or somebody that is lucky enough to have had their songs played at the time socan is monitoring the radio stations.
Socan the company that collects the royalties from the radio stations, only tracks songs on a quarterly basis, for a one week period, randomly of course. So if you've heard a song on the radio there are no guarantees you will get royalties. The people that are getting the royalties, are the ones that happen to be at the right place at the right time.
I think this is unfair to indie bands that may get random airplay. These bands are less likely to get anything, at the crucial part in their career. The ones that are getting all the royalties are the artists that don't need the money because they are getting all the exposure they need.
What i propose is a fair distribution process. Every time a song gets played it gets logged. and the royalties are split evenly, the more you get played the more you make!!!  With computers as powerful as they are now, surely this is possible. The argument i got through socan was that royalty checks wouldn't be as large. Well i think that is in the best interest of the artists that are getting huge royalty checks, while bands that are equally as good can't afford the stamp to write a letter to send to the industry to complain. Maybe if the system was a little more fair band x could afford to put enough gas in their beat up tour van, to get to the next town to play for $50 and a beer.
I urge you to pass this along and to write

to Socan in order to change this injustice
in the letter that you write just mention:
distribute royalties fairly, not randomly,
so we can all get a piece of the pie.
If you are part of the industry and you don't like what i have printed up,
help me up the ladder or send a reasonable chunk of cash and i will remove this web page permanently.
I would prefer to move up than get the cash...Well if i get the cash i can move up...
So either way i win!!!
