Chapter 11
Star Trek: The Savage Generation

After Darren finished contemplating the message, he contacted Counsellor Troi. He met her in her office fifteen minutes later, and began to talk. He described all his feelings, his emotions, his memories, all in as much detail as he could muster. He told her about the message, the incident in the turbolift, and the repetition of 'just a twist in time' when he was singing 'Mine'. He struggled to explain his feeling of 'not belonging', and not just a case of not being a part of the crowd or fitting in, it truly was a sense of being in the wrong place and the wrong time.

Two hours later, they went to see Captain Picard. After explaining things as best they could to him, he then proceeded to contact Geordi LaForge.

"Picard to LaForge" he said, tapping his communicator.

"LaForge here. What can I do for you Captain?" the voice spoke over the comm system.

"Geordi, I need you to review the sensor scans from the sickbay turbolift on Deck 12. Particularly, the scans from yesterday at approximately 13:00."

"What should I be looking for sir?"

"Particularly, a Pu'v, although any sort of transporter signal of some sort would do just as well."

"Aye, Captain. I'll get right back to you." About five minutes later, true to his word, LaForge replied.

"Captain, I have found something. Maybe you should come down here and take a look at this."

"On our way. Picard out." The three left and went down to Engineering.

"Captain, over here!" LaForge's voice called out from behind a monitor. "Look at this. At 12:56 yesterday afternoon, there was a transporter beam activated inside the transporter. We didn't detect it at first, because the design is unfamiliar, but when we began looking for it ..." he trailed off, pointing to the results on the screen in front of him.

"Where you able to trace it?" the Captain asked.

"That's why I had you come down here. I was able to trace it, but rather than lead to another ship, the person was actually beamed to another location on the Enterprise. To be specific, the beam sent the man into Lieutenant Hayes' quarters. Ten minutes later, the beam took him out again and back to the turbolift. We lose him from there."

"Wait a minute" Darren piped in "You're saying that after I saw him in the turbolift, he beamed into my quarters to get away?"

"Turbolift?"

"Sorry Geordi, you haven't been completely filled in on the Lieutenant's experiences in the past few days. But yes, Lieutenant, that seems to be what happened."

"So that must be how he left the message untraceable. It actually originated from my monitor."

"Geordi, can you set up the internal sensors to search for any repeat usage of this transporter beam?" Picard asked.

"Yes, Captain. A few adjustments and we'll know within seconds if someone is using it to transport within the ship. And Captain, there is something else that you should know. The beam is Montu in origin." The Captain's eyes widened.

"Make it so. Lieutenant, I think that your unfortunate circumstances are going to have to act as bait. This man knows that you're on to him, or at least that you can recognize him. He may attempt something more drastic in the future. If the sensors detect the Montu's transporter beam anywhere on the ship, security will be alerted and sent to the location of the beam down point. Then, if he does try to come near you, security will be there within minutes. Good luck.

"Thank you, Captain" Picard walked away, as did LaForge. "And thank you, Counsellor. Things are starting to make a little more sense, as chaotic as they all are."

"Don't worry, Darren. We'll keep working on this. I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?"

"Sure, and thanks again." The Counsellor smiled as she walked away.

Darren went to the turbolift and returned to his quarters. Colby was there, as was Daniel.

"Well, I guess I owe you both an explanation" Darren sat down, and prepared to re-tell his story to his wife and his friend.
