I converted, or shall I say reverted to Islam in 1999?
The autobiography of Malcolm X, by Alex Haley, was
the seed that ALLAH swt planted in my heart and
allowed for it to grow Al-Hamdulillah. I grew up hearing
Islamic based phrases in hip hop music, which I have
loved since the fourth grade, and never really dug into
the meaning of those phrases, but it was different and I
wanted to be a part of it. I have been writing lyrics on
and off for many years and had about a 5 year run with
my embryonic turntablist/DJ attempt when I became
Muslim. Fortunately, I stopped everything from writing
lyrics to the many hours of turntable fitness and
everything that environment had to offer so I could
learn about this beautiful way of life ALLAH swt placed
before me. After a few years or more of learning about
prayer, the arabic alphabet, basic Qur'anic recitation,
and the basic importance of being a practicing Muslim ,
I decided to combine Islamic information and hip hop
together to create positive Islamic based hip hop
music. Suprisingly, I met brother Husein aka Maintain
who turned me onto the rap group "Ashabu Taqwa",
Muslim emcees! Then, I met brother Abdullah aka
Dullah the Jinn who would recite some of his lyrics to
me at martial arts class. Soon after that, I met brother
Shamar aka Ravenistic Deen who invited me over to
his apartment "the cave" and started to place lyrics
over beats with Dullah the Jinn, Amir aka 580, Rav,
and myself and would soon create the group "After
Hijrah". Years have gone by since then and many trials
and hurdles have been slowing the After Hijrah
concept. I put together a solo album self titled "Halal
Styles" with Corey "the Rockstar" on the production
and a Maintain/Halal Styles project also produced by
the Rockstar called "Mainstyles: In the Vicinity" with
featured artists Dullah the Jinn, 580, Abdul-Jalil aka
Mindbender, and a cut produced by Ravenistic Deen. I
plan to work on projects that will help the Islamic hip
hop movement grow whether it be a collaboration,
group, or solo material as long as ALLAH swt allows me
to do so. May ALLAH swt open the doors to His swt
success and make the intentions of all who are
involved in this movement pure for His swt sake only.
