Rico Rodriguez

Rico Rodriguez- Jamaica

Rico will always be remembered as the man who really created the definitive brass sound in Reggae music. Born Emmanuel Rodriguez 1934 in Kingston, Jamaica, he started his musical studies in the famous Catholic Alpha Boys School and soon developed his talent playing the trombone, though he had originally wanted to play the saxophone. It was Rico who, along with his friend, tutor and fellow trombonist Don Drummond, took the trombone to the streets in Jamaica’s folk music: Mento and Ska, and later Rock Steady and Reggae.

He became a Rasta and formed a close musical association with the legendary master Rasta drummer Count Ossie at Wareika Hill near Kingston, recording on literally hundreds of sessions for most of the top producers such as Prince Buster, Coxsone Dodd, Lesley Kong and many others, including recordings of his own compositions. Throughout his career he backed Reggae artistes like Bob Marley, Burning Spear, LKJ et al, becoming a cultfigure in his own right. In 1977 he eventually recorded the solo album ‘MAN FROM WAREIKA’, undoubtedly one of the best instrumental Reggae records ever, a real landmark in spiritual and soulful performance and composition.

Rico’s warm and expressive trombone sound and his solo style has always been highly estimated by fans and musicians, and even now, at the age of more than sixty, he hasn’t stopped recording for innumerable bands and producers all over the world. But most of all, Rico loves to play with his own band which he formed some time ago, comprising some of the most gifted of Jamaica’s and England’s session and studio-musicians, with a rhythm section that provides a real backbone to the grooving and swinging tunes and a horn section that blows up many storms. The CD „You Must Be Crazy„, his first live album ever, was recorded in a crowded club in Dortmund, Germany in March ’94. While it is sometimes somewhat raw and funky, it is not at all unsophisticated, and as you listen to this fine piece of art, you will quickly feel the special atmosphere that Rico and his band create at all of their gigs - a sure delight for all music lovers...

The famous German producer H.P. Setter produced the songs and worked - a few month ago - again with Rico on the forthcoming studio album. ‘Get Up Your Foot‘ will be released on Grover Records very soon and will be promoted by his next European tour!

MAN FROM WAREIKA, COME BLOW YOUR HORN!
