Baked Potato II - Hollywood, California, United States

by Koko on January 14, 1999

Andy Summers played his first Baked Potato gig on Saturday at the new location on Sunset Blvd. The line up was great with Dave Carpenter on bass and Greg Bissonette on drums. There was about 70 people which is a full house for the Baked Potato. Andy got to the place a little before 10pm when he was supposed to start the show at 9pm! He looked in a good mood and his jokes were flawless, almost between every song. He opened the show with a Monk number which he has recorded for the new album and then went straight to the known instrumentals he likes to play at his shows. He did a great rendition of World Gone Strange, you could almost hear his guitar sing the Middle Eastern humming vocals of the tune. Notable performances were Mexico 1920, Last Dance of Mr. X, Big Thing and Lonely Woman with which he talked about his mom. From Golden Wire he played Eartly Pleasures making the reference to World Gone Strange, "earth, world, earth, world" he said and while rubbing his nose went on saying "I guess it's the acid kicking in!" Having seen him play 6 months ago without any Police instrumental, shivers went dowm the spine when he did the opening chord progression for Murder By Numbers. Dave Carpenter's bass runnings were very impressive on that. He closed the show with Monk Hangs Ten with full of energy and emotion from all three. Considering this is the only show of the three to feature Greg on drums, I was expecting them to play "Wildwood" from Greg Bissonette's cd which features Andy on guitar. What a track that is. Definitely one of my favorite, Andy shines on that one with all his solos and smooth playing.

I talked to him after the show and he was happy to sign my Mysterious Barricades cd saying "Haven't seen that one for a while!" He was really excited to tell me that he is almost finished with his new cd which will only have Monk covers and will be out in two months. This definitely was a gig worth having on tape but I prefer soundboard quality and it would be a waste to record a show like this on portable. Don't believe in bad quality sounds. Antoni I didn't ask him your question because I got your message after I saw the gig. I didn't know if there was anybody from the list. I should've posted my mail a day in advance and that's what I plan to do next time.
