Evan's Reef | ||||||||||
Type of break: Reef Best swell direction: West, southwest Best wind direction: East, southeast Best tide: High How to get there from Reykjavik: Take Route 41 south towards Keflavik. Follow directions for Sandvik, Evan's Reef is the cove just past the farm and "Merkines" sign outside of Hafnir. Notes: I named this break Evan's Reef after my first surf here shortly after arriving in Keflavik (see the home page for the story). I have learned that this break has probably been surfed before I first surfed it. However, it gets old saying, "the reef past the farm...no, not that one the one further along near that cove...no, not that cove, the other one..." and so on. Most of the breaks here don't have names that I'm aware of, so for ease of communication with people, I've kept the name. My apologies to any locals or visiting surfers who've previously surfed here and named this break. Evan's Reef needs a fairly strong swell to break. It's a short wave even when it's on, but is a good alternative when Sandvik is closing out and Grindavik is too big. There is a slight channel on the left side of the middle that can be used to get out. Getting in is hard. Both sides of the cove where the break is are jagged cliffs and will have a heavy shorebreak on a good swell. The reef is very shallow at the point and there is alot of kelp. At low tide the reef is exposed. Use caution here. There is also a big left on the south side of the break that I've never surfed. It may have never been surfed. |
