Thorlakshofn (Spelled in Icelandic like "Porlakshofn") |
||||||||
Type of break: Reef pointbreak Best swell direction: South, southeast Best wind direction: South, southwest, west. Blows out on east and north winds. Best tide: High How to get there from Reykjavik: Go through Reykjavik towards Vik and Blue Mountains (Blafjoll). Follow sings for Route 1, at last T-section for Route 1 when leaving Reykjavik go to the right (East). Follow Route 1 past Blafjoll until road splits; Take Route 1 continues towards Vik- take Route 49 towards Thorlakshofn. Follow Route 49 into town of Thorlakshofn. Go straight through town until T-section. Make a left at T-section. You will see a construction area in front of you about 100 meters from T-section, make a right at the construction area. Follow road about 3/4 km to a small road leading to the seawall on the left. There's a small parking area there and the break is directly in front of you. Notes: Thorlakshofn is the most popular break that I'm aware of in Iceland. It is about a half hour drive from Reykjavik. It needs a decent sized swell of at least 2 meters to start to break, but will handle very large swells. There is a very good channel just off of the reef, it is very obvious on a good swell. If there is a good swell, this is the best spot to meet some local surfers. Please be considerate if you visit here. There is another point outside of the main point that isn't as good. If you follow the seawall past the lighthouse, there is a reefbreak that I surfed with Brad Gerlach, Ross Williams, and other pro surfers during their visit with Jeff Divine for The Surfer's Journal. |
