Part Five: The Single Hound
XCIII PAPA above! Regard a Mouse O'erpowered by the Cat; Reserve within thy Kingdom A "mansion" for the Rat! Sung in seraphic cupboards To nibble all the day, While unsuspecting cycles Wheel pompously away. --Emily Dickinson |
Hope gnawed at my heart like a hungry rat,
Ran in and out of my dreams high-walled, I heard its scampering feet: "Pretty rat -- pretty rat -- !" I called, And crumbled it songs to eat. Hope peeped at me from behind my dreams, Nibbled the crumbs of my melodies, Grew tame and sleek and fat; Oh, but my heart knew ease To feel the teeth of my rat! Then came a night -- and then a day -- I heard soft feet that scuttled away -- Rats leave the sinking ship, they say. --Leonora Speyer |
December 5, 2001I think it is a good idea to put some poetry here. I'm very pleased to say that someone named Rattenhuber sent me an email with an Emily Dickinson poem about rats in it. I was pleased for two reasons. First of all, it was my first email in response to this website...so it was special for that reason alone. Second of all, I actually do like Emily Dickinson's poetry and didn't realize she wrote a poem about rats. So here it is...The Rat is the concisest tenant. He pays no rent,— Repudiates the obligation, On schemes intent. Balking our wit To sound or circumvent, Hate cannot harm A foe so reticent. Neither decree Prohibits him, Lawful as Equilibrium. --Emily Dickinson |
