Gia
Supermodel Gia Carangi lives hard and dies young in the glamorous, excessive urban wilds of 1970s New York City. Adapted by Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerney from the biography "Thing of Beauty" by Stephen Fried. Angelina Jolie  has the title role in this biographical drama tracing the tragic rise to fame and death, at age 26, of insecure, self-destructive supermodel Gia who grew up in Philadelphia a victim of child abuse, moved to New York to work as a model in 1977, scored big as a top-ranked cover girl under the tutelage of Wilhemina Cooper (Faye Dunaway), and burned brightly, before pills, coke, and heroin turned her life into a junkie hell. Music of the period includes Billy Joel, David Bowie, and the Pretenders. Filmed in NYC and LA, this feature premiered January 31, 1998 on HBO. -- Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide
My Critique
Oh wow! I could write about about this movie and how great Angelina was in it. This movie gave Angelina her second Golden Globe. True Angelina fans love this movie. All of you who haven't seen it.... go-see it! And for all of you who have..... watch it again and cry your eyes out! I am now reading her biography Thing of Beauty. It just makes you wonder: why didn't anyone try to help Gia? She had friends and family that loved her but just couldn't save her. The movie got me depressed for a couple of days. It had such an impact on me. I just couldn't understand... why her? at the height of her career? when her life was "almost perfect? She was a "beautiful punk" with an "I don't give a damn" attitude. She has such a beautiful soul. I guess it's true that all the good ones die young.
