These are shots from my 3-week trip to Japan in September, 2002
Nijo-jo in Kyoto, which was originally built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, but was reconstructed in the 1930's.
An example of shrine art, from a shrine in Oita prefecture. This example dates from about 1700. The damage is the result of exposure to the elements.
An example of some early Buddhist art from Oita Prefecture. Buddhist tradition in Kyushu is somewhat different from the rest of Japan, being a blend of Buddhist and Shinto elements.
Usa shrine, in Kyushu. Usa is the principal shrine of 40,000 Hachiman shrines throughout Japan.
