If I Could
Copyright Alice E. Steimle - 2003
I think of you so often, my precious sons, and often wish I could turn back the hands of time.  Then again, I look into the future, and that's where I'm heading now.  I am so proud of you both, for although I couldn't always be there for you, you were forever in my heart and prayers.  Not one moment in a day did I not think about you, and wonder what you were doing.  How I prayed you were staying out of mischief, and not giving the baby-sitters a hard time.  We did the best we could, with what little we had, and those days shall I always ponder in my heart.  Now listen to this song carefully, for this is what I would truly say to you both, IF I COULD.  Remember, I loved you then, and I love you more now.  All my love and prayers,
YOUR MAMA
IF I COULD, I'D PROTECT YOU FROM THE SADNESS IN YOUR EYES
GIVE YOU COURAGE IN A WORLD OF COMPROMISE
YES I WOULD, IF I COULD
I WOULD TEACH YOU ALL THE THINGS I NEVER LEARNED
AND I'D HELP YOU CROSS THE BRIDGES THAT I BURNED
YES I WOULD, IF I COULD
I WOULD TRY TO SHADE YOUR INNOCENCE FROM TIME
BUT THAT PART OF LIFE I GAVE YOU ISN'T MINE
I'VE WATCHED YOU GROW, SO I COULD LET GO
IF I COULD I WOULD HELP YOU MAKE IT THRU THE HUNGRY YEARS
BUT I KNOW THAT I CAN NEVER CRY YOUR TEARS
BUT I WOULD, IF I COULD.
IF I LIVE IN A TIME AND PLACE WHERE YOU DON'T WANT TO BE
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WALK ALONG THIS ROAD WITH ME
MY YESTERDAY WOULD HAVE TO BE  YOUR WAY
IF I KNEW I'D HAVE TRIED TO CHANGE THE WORLD I BROUGHT YOU TO
AND THERE ISN'T VERY MUCH THAT I CAN DO, BUT  I WOULD
IF I COULD
IF I COULD I WOULD TRY TO SHADE YOUR INNOCENCE FROM TIME
BUT THAT PART OF LIFE I GAVE YOU ISN'T MINE
I'VE WATCHED YOU GROW, SO I COULD LET YOU GO
IF I COULD, IF I COULD  I WOULD HELP YOU THRU THE HUNGRY YEARS
BUT I KNOW THAT I CAN NEVER CRY YOUR TEARS
BUT I WOULD IF I COULD
YES I WOULD, YES I WOULD, IF I COULD
If I Could is sung by Barbra Streisand, and used for entertainment only.  I take no credit for this song.  The credit purely goes to Ms. Barbra Streisand alone.
