Preface Story for "Thank You" Poem
From 1996 to 1999, Kathy and Dennis Rejcek had been neighbors of ours. Kathy and Dennis are both very active in the local Methodist church and would often take my kids with them to church and church activities. I was not a member of any church at the time and I just enjoyed having Sunday morning to myself. I was raised as a Methodist and I always believed in God and knew he was real. I was taught to pray and trust in Jesus, I just didn't know how to act on that faith.
Kathy and Dennis were both Sunday school teachers and very involved with the youth in the church. My youngest son, Kevin, was in Dennis's Sunday school class, Kevin loved church and all my kids adored Kathy and Dennis. They talked about the Rejek's so often that I teased them saying they loved Kathy more than their own mother.
We moved away in 1999 and my kids quit going to church. In 2001, Kevin was 11 yrs. old and we lost him in a swimming accident. I was astonished when I saw Kathy at Kevin's funeral. She and some other members of the church who knew Kevin had heard about the accident from my Dad. They came because they loved Kevin and wanted me to know that they remembered him.
I now deeply regret that I did not raise my kids in the church and I did not set the example by going with them instead of sending them off with someone else.
My first grandchild, Sarah Grace Small, was born shortly after Kevin had gone home to God. I was determined to see that she would be raised in the church and that her Mother and I would both be there to set the right example. Later that same year, I was baptised and became a member of Robinson Drive United Methodist Church. I am very proud to be a part of the body of Christ and member of the Family of God. And it is all started because Kathy and Dennis live their faith, giving of themselves and took the time to care about someone else's children.
