Page 1 Math for Artists IF THIS PAGE DOESN"T LOOK RIGHT, CLICK HERE Math for Non-Linear Thinkers Math for people who don't think in a straight line Math for Non-Engineers Math for the Rest of Us Featuring "Wet Math" with special video footage of Dr. Ray McAllister, a pioneer of ocean engineering This web site (and book and video) aims to make math interesting, "edutainment" and useful in our lives. We need math to hunt for stars We don't need math to do gymnastics. (but we can explain it.) Some people are hunters some people gather information and math is different for each of them. we need math to construct buildings (a linear process, one step at a time) we need artists to improve our world |
"Math for Artists" is for people who think OUTSIDE The Box "Math for Artists" is not the most direct way of solving the problem, but it works in the "real world" and it works for artists and creative engineers. There is more than one way to climb a mountain, and there's more than one way to learn geometry, algebra, trig, fractions, probability, circles, triangles, square roots and squares and cubes. |

There's more than one way to get out of a box. This baby could be crawling out feet first. Or she could be just sitting in the sun. |

How do we cut the corn? Do we start in one corner and go edge to edge to edge and end up in the middle? Or do we cut on one side of the field? Does it matter? No. The field is harvested. |

Most boys are trained early to find one answer. Part of this might be from the caveman. The hunters focused on one thing until they killed it. When there's a problem, guys tend to focus on it until the problem goes away. Boys are also trained to "be a man, handle this yourself." They are trained to find a solution. They CONVERGE on a solution. they are LINEAR thnikers because they think in a straight line -- running to the answer. |

Girls are often told, "Let me help you." Evolution from the cavewoman gives girls the ability to do many things at once. The successful cavewoman could watch the food, watch the fire, watch the child and defend the cave at the same time. Often women work together to sovle a problem. Teachers need to relax, let students work together to discuss the various sides before proceding. Talking about a problem is particularly important for female students. Girls can see many possibilities. They are DIVERGENT thinkers, usually, since they can anticipate many different possibilities. (Some men can develop divergent thinking...they turn into good husbands!) Girls don't think in a straight line. they are NON-LINEAR thinkers. This web page calls them "Artists". |

Math sometimes looks like a long dark tunnel. The answer is somewhere down the end of the road. But really, there are three or four ways to get down the road. |

Math problems can seem confusing or impossible to unravel. A math problem can be like a knot in a shoelace. Where do you pull to release the tension? How do you untie the shoelace? You can pull the man from behind the cello, or you can pull the cello from the man. Or you can smash the cello and then the man will be seen. There are several ways to find the answer. NEXT PAGE |
REMEMBER...this web page is giving you a theory. It is not a proven fact. It is an easy way to understand why most boys enjoy math and why most girls are frustrated by some of the rules of math. The GOAL is important to the hunter. Boys usually rush to an answer. Girls usually want to know more information and want to discuss the procedure. Process is important to the Artist. |
