Fifty-third day of Spring, Year of the Bear (afternoon) [5/9/02]

The day started quite fast.

Just as I stepped out of the inn this morning, I heard a shout, and the source of it knocked me over. It seems a child had been playing in the square and was almost run over by a large cart. A man in red scooped her out of harm’s way, but was bumped by the wagon and stumbled on top of me. The child was unharmed, and ran off to her mother. The man introduced himself as Seamus the Red--and he’s another paladin. We didn’t speak for long, but he seems to be devoted to the Church as I am not. He spoke of his search for “work for an honest fighting man,” saying that he had heard ill of the guards. I mentioned Raen and my relatively high opinion of him, as well as Daron and the way he left the guards. We parted then, I to walk the city for a while.

Sounds of a commotion drew my attention, but I couldn’t hear what was going on clearly. I made my way in that direction. When I got there, Raen and several guards were attending a large crowd gathered around a house and a man who stood easily on two broken legs. I didn’t tarry to get the meaning of this, since I had no desire to deal with the guards, and came back to the market.

When I got there, I noticed Treble. I mentioned that I had seen him yesterday afternoon, looking upset, and tried to draw his problem out. Doing this was like pulling teeth, but my labor was fruitful. It came out that he was considering going on the expedition to the ruins by himself, because he had had a falling out with Daron over its organization. Treble has been to Thornvale before, it seems, and possesses a map and is privy to information Lord Malffaeyr has given him explicit orders not to reveal to anyone. This angered Daron, it seems, and caused the schism between the two of them. I drew this out of Treble, assuring him that he can count me as a friend, and suggested a third alternative to either betraying his lord or holding out on Daron. He seemed much happier afterward. I then mentioned Daron and Natala’s absences, which seemed to concern him some. He asked me if I’d asked the guards, but I told him the truth that I hadn’t. I then parted with him to return here.
