Evening [5/8/02]
Hermy never fails to surprise me…
Actually, before I met him again today, I saw Treble acting most distraught over something or other in the marketplace this afternoon. Kywyn, who came up at that moment, asked me if I planned on intervening, but Treble left the market before I could do so.
Then, when I went out again after sunset, intending to go to the Guild and see if anyone was around to perhaps explore the slums with me, Hermy came up behind me on the street. He told me he theorizes that Daron and Natala are in love, to explain their absences of these last few days. When I thought about it, and he pointed out to me a few things about the way they behave around each other, it does make sense. He believes they’ve eloped somewhere, and was worried we may have missed the wedding. I assured him that they would probably announce it if they were marrying, then changed the subject to what happened with the fat man earlier today. He still seems to think that he didn’t act with bravery, in spite of my reassurances. I told him what Gray Master told me and had me read--that too often, bravery goes unnoticed and meets with to gratitude. Lady Cuwen--the woman he saved--expresses her thanks to him profusely, but when she does so, it seems to make him nervous. I’m sure I’ll get him to come around. We arrived at the Guild shortly thereafter, finding Kywyn on the front step--Hermy was able to spot and identify him even in the dark, whereas I wouldn’t have even recognized there was someone there. Hermy told him his theory, which he reacted to with shock, then went unusually cold and wished us a good evening. Hermy said of him that he “doesn’t understand Kywyn half the time.” He has a very good point.
We went inside, but I failed to see Daron around. I then considered the hour, and the fact that I had no one to back me up if I chose to investigate the slums, and returned here.
Now I’m going to sleep.
