Forty-fifth day of Spring, Year of the Bear (morning) [4/18/02]
How long has it been since I’ve written…? Six days. Unbelievable.
On the 39th and the 40th, a horde of shadows attacked the city, after I’d gone to bed. A ruckus downstairs awoke me and I came down, dressed for trouble. The handful of shadows we’d encountered were small fish compared to what faced us now: many times their number, in addition to a stronger creature (Wraiths, we ended up calling them) that wielded a scimitar and one dressed in corporeal armor and wielding a spear (a Durahan, according to a Jackal I met). I forgot all my fatigue as what seemed like and endless night began.
I retrieved the sunrods the priest of Ordemetrex gave me, and I’m glad I did. They came in amazingly handy. As I said before, there were three kinds of foes on that night: the shadows, the wraiths, and the Durahans. The shadows are harmed by the touch of the light. I was never able to find out how it affected a wraith or a Durahan, though.
Daron, Hermy, Raen, and I went to the inn courtyard to face them. Hermy had collected a number of spirit bottles and stuck rags in the top, then lit them, creating a weapon that would cause a burst of flame after shattering on its target. We fended off shadows, then a wraith strode forward to do combat with Daron. It seems that he was the only one with a weapon that could harm any of the enemy. It took him some struggle, but he slew the wraith after taking a wound from its touch--nothing that harmed his flesh, it seemed, but one that drained his strength. It had barely fallen when something far worse--a phantom in corporeal armor, a Durahan--stepped forth and hefted its spear. At that time, Treble, a half-elf whom I believe is named Natala, and one of the city guards arrived to help. They worked at fending off the Durahan while the guard, Raen, and I rushed the innocents in the inn to a shelter that the city mages had set up--a “firewall,” which cast light enough to hold off the enemy and was manned to hold off those of them resistant to the light. Other civilians had been gathered there, but I stayed only long enough to speak shortly with a Jackal there and instruct my charges to stay there. I noticed Kywyn there, and told him of the situation at the inn. All of a sudden, the wraiths that had been attacking turned and went west--I thought was the direction of the inn. Since none of the guards looked ready to come help me (there were many wraiths and Durahans there,) I rushed back there with Kywyn following me. When we arrived, they had just managed to slay the Durahan, after it had thrown its spear through Natala. We went inside, where some began setting up another firewall around the inn while others and myself treated Natala--removing the spear was bloody and dangerous, but once it was out I was able to close and partially heal the wound with my touch. Thank Agathalos she lived. After we got the firewall blazing, we decided the Temple of Ordemetrex would be a safe haven, so we placed Natala on a makeshift stretcher and went forth, sunrods keeping the enemy at bay. We arrived with no trouble to speak of, and took brief shelter in the temple, where Natala was treated by real experts in healing. A cleric enchanted my sword, and we went forth to help where we could.
Little came of it, however. Treble’s thought was for the lord Malifaeyr, so we went on to the palace. Nothing was to be done there, so we went on back to the firewall, where a mysterious flash of light banished the enemy. I was too tired to wonder where it came from; I came back to the inn straightaway and went to bed. I’ve spent time since then meditating, resting, and training with my sword and staff--something I’ve neglected.
And now, I’m sure, there is more to do. I’ll go downstairs now and see what’s happening around the city.
