These are true stories of some of the special needs Rotties we have featured in the past. These Rotties have either recovered or are on the road to recovery. Their medical bills have been paid. Hopefully by making Rottweiler owners and the public aware of the neglect and abuse some of these rescues go through will help Rottweiler Rescues across the country.
If you would like to donate or volunteer to help the Rottweiler rescues who have saved these Rotties, please contact the Rottweiler rescue group or check the Rescue Links page for a Rottie Rescue in your area or state.

Susie
![]() |
24 Feb 2000 -- Susie, a 58 pound 2 year old female Rottweilers was abused and starved on a whim by her owners. Susie was rescue by a caring relative, Kim Yohn, along with the help of Dee Lehman of Keystone Rottweiler Rescue and Susie's now foster parents, Dottie and her husband are volunteers for the Helen Krause Animal Foundation. Susie's foster mom says "She has a radiant, forgiving personality and is so grateful to have been saved that she wriggles with joy every time she sees someone." Susie is in need of surgery very soon to her left eye, or else she will go blind. It appears to be the result of the abuse, an injury caused from a heavy blow to the head or it may be congenital if she came from a puppy mill. The only way this can be determined is by doing the surgery. |
March 18, 2000 - Susie has been adopted and is now with her new adoptive family. With lots of TLC Susie now weighs 89 pounds and is full of life. Susie's adoptive family will continue to give Susie the medical care that is needed. Susie's rescuer's plan to prosecute the ones responsible for Susie's abuse. Susie was adopted thru: The Helen Opperman Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. PO Box 311 Mechanicsburg, Pa 17055-0311 |

|

Savannah was treated for mange and is slowly putting on weight. She's a very happy girl, with an outgoing loving personality, but because of her neglect she is starved for some one-on-one bonding. Savannah is eager to please, and gets so excited over little things like living indoors, having bones to chew, and playing with tennis balls. Adopted March 2000! |

SAM -
North Carolina
![]() |
1/21 Sam's original rescuer, Tara, stopped for what she thought was a dead dog, she was shocked when Sam slowly rose on his weak unsteady legs. Michelle heard about Sam, contacted Tara and picked him up. Sam is extremely underweight, (59 pounds) -- he is severly anemic, has sores from lying on the
protruding bones on his hips and rear, has severly atrophied muscles
in
his thighs, his head is sunken...and Sam tested heartworm positive.Sam has been treated for heartworms, neutered, and he is strong again. Visit Sam's web page for more pictures and to read more about his rescue. March 18, 2000 - Sam has a wonderful new home, with two young boys to play with. He will live within blocks of a river to swim in, and will go to soccer and baseball games, to cheer with his "mom". Sam now weighs around 90 pounds. |
Hope - 8 month old Rottie puppy |
![]() |
April 27, 2000 Update on HOPE - The woman that starved Hope was found guilty and applied for and received Accelerated Rehabilitation. She is to do NO community service and must pay a FIFTY dollar fine, payable to an animal charity. Hope is now legally owned by the veterinarian that worked so hard to save her. That is a bright spot in an otherwise dim picture. Hope's expenses have been paid by the town and also thru the generosity of donations made in her name to North East Rottweiler Rescue & Referral, Inc. She is now up to 55 lbs. and is doing very well.
Nov 10, 1999--Animal Control received a call to investigate a cruelty case. An 8 month old Rottie puppy was presented to a veterinarian
for treatment, she weighed THIRTEEN POUNDS!!!! This tiny little skeleton of a puppy was so weak that
she couldn't pick her head up. To quote the ACO "I cannot tell you all how much it hurts to see this little girl and
to guess at the horror that has been her life up to this point. In my 23
years in the animal control field I have never seen a dog this thin that
is still living."
Nov 28--Hope will be adopted!! The Dr. that has been treating Hope has decided she wants to adopt Hope (pending outcome of her previous owners trial). This is so wonderful for Hope, she will be adopted by someone she has already grown to love and trust! Hope now weighs 27 pounds(barely feel her ribs now) and seems to be 'out of the woods'! She is starting to play, trying to run...they are guessing she will only get to about 40 pounds if that...that's how much she her growth was stunted... (Update provided by one of the ladies that works with the Vet treating Hope)
Tripod - St. Francis Animal Rescue - Clarksville, TN
......
Oct 1999 - Tripod a 6 mo. old neutered male Rottweiler, was born without a front left leg. His previous owner took him in, but
then left him behind with co-workers at an auto garage after being arrested
on drug charges, he never returned for the dog.
One of the men finally brought Tripod to St. Francis Animal Rescue. Unfortunately, Tripod was never provided with the necessary nutrition that he needed in order to develop strong enough bones that would better prepare his "good leg" to compensate for the missing leg. He would continue to fall, over and over again, and his shoulder blade looked like it was going to come out of the socket. Shortly after Tripod was in the care of St. Francis Animal Rescue they found his stump was very infected. It had to be surgically removed to the shoulder to get all of the infection out AND had to have a herniated belly button removed as well. S.F.A.R has been in contact with an orthopedic doctor that is willing to help Tripod for free for the remainder of his life, in possibly manufacturing a prosthetic leg. This, of course, would require time and willingness on his new owners part.
Tripod was adopted by a family in Wisconsin that has 2 other male Rotties, one of which is also 3-legged (due to a gunshot). His new owner drove from Wisconsin to Tennessee with his alpha Rottie to make sure everything was okay between them. Tripod has found a wonderful home with a family who saw the beauty of the dog within....they knew this "not so perfect Rottie" boy had so much to offer despite his handicaps.
ELLIS Miami, Florida - Gulfstream Rottweiler Club
August 1999 - Grace Acosta found Ellis at the Miami Dade Animal Control. At first she thought he was a Neopolitan Mastiff. As she took a closer at him....she realized he was a ROTTWEILER! Animal Control in Miami received a complaint of a stray dog, apparently this dog has been roaming the area
near Homestead, Florida. Ellis was approximately 4 years old, weighs 72 pounds. He also tested positive for heartworms and sarcoptic mange. Grace Acosta wrote: "He will be called... AMERICAN DREAM! "You might wonder why Ellis? Ellis Island, where all the immigrants came looking for the AMERICAN DREAM. " Ellis has been treated for heartworm and his mange is now gone. |
