Mahathir wins again

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is swept back into power with a resounding majority, but significant gains by the opposition take the shine off his election victory.

In the run-up to the Malaysian election, four main opposition parties have joined forces to challenge the Barisan Nasional (National Front) coalition government of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. They won Kelantan and also Terengganu State.

The People And The Politics

Malaysia votes on Monday in its 10th general elections. In the polls, 193 seats will be in contention as the Dewan Rakyat, or Lower House, has been expanded. To win a simple majority, a party or coalition of parties needs to control at least 97 seats. For a two-thirds majority, at least 129 are needed.

National Front:
Barisan Nasional : A coalition government led by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, the dominant component of the 14-party coalition is Mahathir's United Malays National Organization(Umno). Other major parties include the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC).

Alternative Front:
Barisan Alternatif :The main opposition alliance, it consists of four parties; the Parti Keadilan Nasional (PKN), Parti Islam Malaysia (PAS), the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and the Malaysian People's Party (PRM). They have joined forces to challenge Dr Mahathir's coalition government.
