The communications

Two types of communications are employed in SWAT:
- The first, which uses a LASH radio system
- The second, which uses manual signs.

The LASH radio system picks up throat vibrations. For that reason, policemen using this system have to murmur. Some louder sounds can endanger the conversation, and the life of the cops. The verbal exchanges have to be short, for fear of being heard by suspects. To simplify the conversations, they use keywords. Exemple :“Open door”.

LASH
The second system comes from the Army, and is used all over the World. This is manuals signs. They are simple, but have to be well understood by all SWAT cops. Here they are :

Stanby ! - Fist : Hold

Cover for threat ! - Flat hand, horizontal : Cover, aim

Hurry up ! - Fist with arm at right angles : Hurry

Suspect ! - Hand with all fingers spread : Suspect (the hand show the direction of the suspect)

Hey ! - Snapping fingers : Attention

Look ! - Index finger pointing : Look (the finger show the direction to look)

It's clear ! - Thumb up : Confirm that its clear

Stop ! - Flat hand, vertical : Stop

If a suspect sees a SWAT officer, or if a sniper misses his target, the intervention is interrupted. The officers must warn their team members by saying “Compromised !”.
