The National Highway Safety Administration (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/) estimates that 1.2 million automobile crashes each year are the direct result of drivers who are distracted. (There are many more near-crashes, but of course, those are not reported.) Many distracted-drivers crashes are fatal. The headlines are full of stories of high school students involved in auto crashes. You probably know of a high school student who was killed in an auto crash or one who was seriously injured.

If you are a licensed driver, think about your own driving. Have you ever been distracted? Have you had a near-crash? Have you been involved in an auto crash where the driver was distracted?

This writing unit is designed to make you aware of distractions you might encounter when you drive. It is also designed to give you the opportunity to help your peers avoid dangerous driving distractions. Your work through this unit might save a life.
