Remember why you are taking this course
you didn’t "get it" in school… So we need to try something different ... Welcome to Mr. Mac's SAT Prep course The idea is to get you to be your own teacher. Tell yourself when and where to study. Suggestion: Carry your SAT TEST Book with you. Everywhere. 1. Sign up at www.number2.com and spend at least 30 minutes each week in that course. 2. Visit www.freevocabulary.com and print two pages a week. 3. Read EVERY QUESTION in the SAT workbook. Put a question mark on the questions you can't do in 30 seconds and bring those questions to class. 4. Sign up for WORD TO CELL PHONE and WORD TO EMAIL.. send your email and cell phone text address to mistermath@COMCAST.NET 5. Call the teacher. Hey, why not? 954 646 8246... It's my job to motivate you. Some of you have a learning style that needs to be heard... you need to perform and you need to hear the words performed. 6. Send the teacher an email to indicate that you have received the CD. mistermath@comcast.net About Mr. Mac I’ve been a tutor for math and SAT prep since 1986. I live in my car, driving from class to student to class. I hope you will send your suggestions to improve the presentation of this information. I recommend that you learn about multiple learning styles à mathForArtists.com has a list of learning styles. This booklet comes with a CD – there are videos on the CD -- watch and learn! REMINDERS Type the web sites carefully. Some of the links are on my web pages (look at www.teachersTOteachers.com and click on SAT). Be nice... call me if you can't find these web sites: 954 646 8246. www.sat-secrets.com is another interesting web site. STEP BY STEP 1. For a good review of math and even word study, visit www.number2.com. It’s helpful for studying words. 2. Learn new words every day. Get dramatic. Create situations and they’ll help you remember. “That man is vindictive. He said bad things about my brother and he’s lying. He just wants to hurt my brother.” 3. Look at every problem in the book. Skip the ones you know. Focus on the ones you don’t know and put a question mark. You have 30 seconds for each problem. 4. Review the pages - look at every word at least four times. 5. www.freevocabulary.com – it’s a list of 5000 words. You can cross off 2000 – you cross out a word when you can read it and give a synonym. VICARIOUS. Hmmm ... watching the race on TV was a vicarious experience for the man with the broken leg. He wanted to participate but he couldn’t so he enjoyed it vicariously, from a distance.” That’s called “giving a synonym” or putting the word in other words. Put the word in your own words if you want to cross it off. 6. What is your learning style? If you work well with other people, then don’t study alone. Talk about the problems. When it comes time to doing the test, you’ll remember the conversations you had about similar problems. If you like studying alone, then put in the time to really, really know the problems. 7. Know your math. The test does not cover Tan, Cosine and Sine. No trigonometry. Focus on geometry, probability, number sense, and algebra. Got that? Nctm.org has a good review of math. Do a search “math review.” (Ask me for some videos that youcan borrow. There are some fabulous teachers on tape...) 8. Pay attention! Success with the test comes from looking at a lot of problems. You want to see as many problems as possible ahead of time so that there are no surprises. “Oh, yeah, I saw that before. But I never learned how to handle it.” 9. Get exercise – at least three times a week. Breathe deeply. Sweat. You should be out of breath or breathing hard at least once a day. Our brains work better after six or eight weeks of aerobic exercising. “I don’t want to perspire” or “I’ll have to change my clothes.” “I don’t have time.” No excuses. Make time to sweat. 10. Eat properly and get the right amount of sleep – every day. One good night of sleep after 10 days of partying won’t do it. This is a commitment. If you follow these points, you’ll improve your score. 11. Want to get a word sent to your cell phone or receive the word by email? Write to mistermath@comcast.net and I’ll send you the word a day. Then send the word to your parents’ cell phone and ask them to use the word of the day in their daily life. To find your cell phone’s email address, contact your cell phone provider. There might be a charge for each message sent to your cell phone. YOU CAN DO IT… 12. Visit other web sites about SAT. Reminders www.freevocabulary.com Learn new words every day. www.number2.com TeachersToTeachers.com Don’t study alone Word to Cell Phone You want to say, “I saw that before!” Get exercise Eat properly and get enough sleep. Skip the problems that you know. Look at every problem in the practice book. So you want to prepare for the SAT? Some tips from an SAT tutor: Many students are very good at class work (which extends over many days or weeks). The SAT is a fun test for people with a VERY SHORT attention span, since you only need to focus for less than 2 minutes per question. If you are a studious person, you might find the test’s scattered format a bit unnerving. Don’t worry – you will do well in college. If you like going step by step, that’s the skill that you need in college (and this short test called the SAT does not test how well you perform over 16 weeks). If you are a visual learner, you might also have a tough time dealing with some of the SAT problems. Don’t worry… just don’t get distracted by some of the extra information. http://www.sat-secrets.com Sign up for the free email newsletter www.collegeboard.com Sign up for the free email reminders Signup for a word a day at www.wordsmith.com Get a book of questions and do A LOT OF THEM. McCrea, Tutor mistermath@comcast.net , www.teacherstoteachers.com http://www.flashcardexchange.com/card_set.php?id=218958 flash cards In addition to studying for the SAT, try this: look for books that promote lateral thinking. Here are two examples of lateral problems… The Island A guy named Charles is dropped by parachute onto an island that measures one mile by two miles long. The island is covered with trees. There is a strong wind blowing from the north. Charles has a camp in the middle of the island. A fire starts on the north end of the island. There are 400 foot cliffs on all sides of the island. How does Charles survive? The Elevator A guy named Fred lives on the 8th floor. In the morning he walks to the elevator, goes down, walks to work. At 6 p.m., he walks into the elevator, goes to the 6th floor and walks up two flights to his apartment. Why? Send an email to me with your explanation. If you have a better explanation than my explanation, I’ll post it on my internet site. The NCTM Challenge: Can you describe how to solve the problems on nctm.org’s web site? If so, you could win a box of candy. Send me an email message and get ready to perform your understanding of the problems. In other words, SAT tips are helpful AND your success in life depends on emotional intelligence. DO a search of “emotional intelligence” and “life skills” and learn about Daniel Goleman. Questions? Send an email to mistermath@comcast.net. REMEDY: Write. Write a full essay and send it to me to review. You don't need to come to each course, but it is a good practice if you show me your outline and then sit for 30 minutes and actualy write an essay. READ the newspaper...the persuasive essays (opinions and editorials). sun-sentinel.com miamiherald.com nytimes.com I just need to improve my reading. REMEDY: study lots of words. Lots of words. Lots of words. Your reading will improve. READ THE QUESTIONS FIRST. Be prepared to skip some questions if you take too long looking at them. This is a study hall as well as a "tutorial" -- the instructor attempts to speak to each student at least once during each class. BRING QUESTIONS TO CLASS. Identify the problems and we'll try to answer them. |
