TECA 1354 OBSERVATION LAB ASSIGNMENTS

As part of the learning experience in this course, you are required to participate in 10 hours of observation lab work.  The following is a list with descriptions of 28 activities to satisfy this part of the course requirements.  Choose any 10 to submit.  Be sure that you address all of the required elements in the assignment. 


1.   An Exercise in Naturalistic Observation

PURPOSE  This assignment should illustrate the importance of observation and interpretation.

2.   Child Observation
PURPOSE  The purpose of this exercise is to learn about the three domains of child development and the method of naturalistic observation.

3.   Interviewing for Generational Differences
PURPOSE  The purpose of this exercise is to compare the degree of adult responsibility given to children in the early twentieth century with adultlike responsibilities of children today. This activity  will also give experience in interviewing techniques.

4.   Having a Baby
PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to become familiar with the psychological, physical, social, and emotional effects of preparing for a baby.

5.   OB Visit
PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to become famiiar with hospital birthing facilities. Arrange with a local hospital to tour the facilities for delivery and postnatal care.

6.   Changing Views of Infant Nutrition
PURPOSE   The purpose of this activity is to become aware of changes in past generations' ideas of an ideally nourished baby.

7.   Toy Story

PURPOSE  The purpose of this activity is to analyze how toys facilitate infant perception and cognitive development.

8.   Interviewing Parents on Baby's First Word

PURPOSE   The objective of this exercise is to examine the first words of infants and look for universal patterns.

9.   Observing Children Learn

PURPOSE   This activity illustrates the importance of the social context in which much of learning takes place.

10.  Designing a Child Care Center

PURPOSE   The objective of this activity is to apply ideas and concepts of development in designing components of a child care center.

11.  Crying in Infants
PURPOSE   The objective of this exercise is to recognize and understand the different types of infant crying and the function of each type.

12.  Development of Temperaments

PURPOSE:  This activity demonstrates that most parents' descriptions of their babies' temperaments fall into the categories described in the New York Longitudinal Study.

13.  Fathers and Children

PURPOSE The objective of this activity is to use naturalistic observation techniques to evaluate interactions.

14.  A Preschool Playground
PURPOSE: This activity will give experience in designing and understanding the needs of a preschool playground. 

15.  Emergency Procedures for Preschoolers

PURPOSE The objective of this activity is to identify safety measures for young children by interviewing local professionals and parents of preschoolers.

16.  Priorities in Early Childhood Education

PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to to identy priorities in early childhood education.

17.  Local Resources for Early Childhood Education
PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to identify available community resources for early childhood education
18.  Parenting Styles
PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to develop awareness of the various parenting styles and their effects on childrenÕs development.

19.  Consequences of Misbehavior
PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to develop consequences of misbehavior.

20.  Special Education Programs for ADHD Students
PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to identify programs in the community available for children with ADHD.

21.  Children and Memory

PURPOSE   The objective of this exercise is to assess developmental differences in children's metamemory.

22.  The Bilingual Advantage

PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to be aware of the bilingual experience and the effect on student learning..

23.  What Is a Friend?

PURPOSE   The objective of this activity is to explor
e the development trend of friendships. Ask five school age children to complete the written statement "A friend is...." To examine other aspects of peer relationships, consider asking subjects to complete the statements "My friend is . . ." and "Friends don't...."

24.  Gender Differences in Peer Activities

PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to identify how gender influences peer interactions in the middle childhood years.

25.  The Effects of Divorce on Children

PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to assess the psychological and lifestyle effects of divorce on children.

26.  Connect with Television

PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to identfy and recognize how primie-time television portrays middle childhood age boys and girls.

27.  KohlbergÕs Moral Delimmas Activity

PURPOSE  The objective of this activity is to develop an understand the moreal reasonng of adolescents. 

28.  Generational Differences in Relationships

PURPOSE   How has adolescence changed since your parents were teenagers? Your grandparents? These are interesting questions to consider, especially for younger students who may still suffer from lingering adolescent egocentrism and have forgotten that their parents and grandparents actually
were teenagers at one time.
Assignments Due
Students are required to complete 10 lab assignments, view 8 videos and complete the questionnaire form for each video

There also will be a series of evaluations and a final exam.
